Review: Avene Skin Recovery Cream

Review:

I have used about 3 or 4 tubes of Avene Skin Recovery Cream now, also known as Cream for Intolerant Skin in the US. There is another Rich version of the cream that I have also used and will review later.

I started using Avene Skin Recovery Cream when I got a very bad eczema outbreak. I still have my eczema and I like Avene Skin Recovery Cream because it doesn't irritate my skin further. There is no stinging sensation or redness even when applied at the eczema areas. It does help to soothe my eczema but I need something oilier on top as the areas are usually very dry. I usually layer with either Avene Instant Smoothing Moisture Mask or Avene Cicalfate Restorative Skin Cream, both are oilier creams which I do not use daily. Avene Skin Recovery Cream can be used daily as it is a moisturizer.

The Skin Recovery Cream spreads very easily and absorbs fast. There is no sticky sensation when applied and it leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated. The cream is not oily, it feels more water based and soothes my skin well. Avene Skin Recovery Cream is good if you have eczema skin/sensitive or irritated skin like mine.

All in all, I am satisfied with this cream as it is a simple, basic hydrating cream which does not irritate my eczema and is suitable for my skin type. I have been re-purchasing many times and I even have spares of this tube so that I never run out.

The cream does not come cheap, it is S$40+ for one 30ml tube, so it is best to stock up during a sale or buy them from hospital pharmacies where they are sold at a cheaper price.

My Eczema Skin Triggers

I have noticed that there are a few things that trigger my eczema and I thought I'd share it with all of you. For those with eczema, or any kind of skin sensitivity, it is important to identify triggers that set off the skin irritation so as to reduce the likelihood of eczema. Ultimately, I would like to be able to stop topical steroid creams.

1. Alcohol
A very common ingredient found in so many skincare products/cosmetics. It is difficult to avoid it but it is do-able. Alcohol stings my skin and makes my skin turn red. After a few hours or by the next day, my skin will start to itch. It is a common skin irritant but cosmetic companies still include alcohol as it has it's uses - helps product absorb faster, leaves a refreshing feel for those with oily skin, etc. My advice is always look through the ingredients list and avoid products with alcohol featuring prominently on the top of the list.

Problem is, so many skincare products have alcohol within their first 10 ingredients. In most products, alcohol is the second ingredient after water, which means there is a lot of alcohol to potentially irritate your skin. I can't avoid alcohol a lot of the time. The 2 serums I use - Shiseido Whitening serum and Kose moisture serum - both contain alcohol. What I do is a mix it into my Avene Skin Recovery Cream. Yes, I know serums should go first before cream so work at it's best. But given my skin condition, the only way for me to get whitening benefits is to mix the serum into the cream to make it a whitening cream. I mix by rubbing the cream and serum (sometimes both serums) together in circular motion between my palms. After doing this, I feel that a lot of the alcohol evaporates with the heat generated by the rubbing. I then gently spread then pat the cream into my skin. So far, this works for me.

2. Exfoliants
Manual scrubs and chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs irritate my skin but I do have blackhead and clogged pore problems to deal with. What I do now is I only use AHA cream (Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel) only at my t-zone area where I don't get eczema flare-ups. To deal with my cheeks, I use a very mild AHA face wash but only once a week or once in 2 weeks.

3. Harsh chemicals
Chemicals like retinoids and sometimes even Vitamin C makes my skin red and itchy.

4. Some natural skincare products
Since I'm working on this list I thought it would be good to debunk the myth that natural skincare products is safe on sensitive skin precisely because it is natural. Not.True. Don't fall for these irresponsible sales tactics the sales staff use. I've gotten burnt many times by natural skincare products that turn my face red and burns my face like mad. When you buy natural skincare, it is very important to know what goes into it. If you read websites like environmental working group's you'll know how much harsh non-natural and natural ingredients are used. In general, I am wary about natural skincare products, especially if you cannot by sure the ingredients are truly natural or just chemical derivatives of it. I prefer to use skincare brands specifically developed for sensitive skin instead.

5. Dry skin
The moment I don't have sufficient moisture/oil on my skin, it will start to itch. I have to layer on my moisturiser immediately after cleansing before allowing the skin's moisture any chance to evaporate. Immediately after cleansing, I pat dry my skin, use toner and follow with my moisturiser mix (as described above). The Avene Skin Recovery Cream works for me as it is oily enough to counter my dry skin. Creme de La Mer also works but it is also very expensive. Although strictly speaking, I do not have dry skin, but more combination skin. However it is important for me to use products for dry skin as products for normal to combination skin do not provide enough oil/moisture balance for my skin.

It is important to know your skin well. If you have eczema-prone skin like mine, try to identify your skin triggers. It is likely that your skin triggers are different from mine as sensitive skins tend to be a mystery. Just observe how your skin reacts to certain products and if the same reaction occurs repeatedly and results in skin irritation, that might very well be your eczema/sensitive skin trigger.

Review: Laneige Multi Cleanser

Review:
I use this cleanser on days when I am lazy to double cleanse - days when all I have on is a layer of sunscreen and don't want to go through the oil cleanser, face wash regime. This cleanser saves time as it can remove my sunscreen and cleanse at the same time. (When I use makeup, I will still use an oil cleanser.) Do note that sunscreen has to be removed using a makeup remover. If you are using a water-proof/water resistant sunscreen, I'd still suggest using an oil cleanser.

This cleanser foams well and cleanses well. My skin is left clean with no tight of dry feeling. I did not feel any skin irritation or sensitivity. The exfoliation is very mild and after foaming I can hardly feel anything. It is the papain enzyme that is responsible for the exfoliation and is gentle enough for daily use. The scent is not over-powering and is a nice refreshing scent that I like. Those who are sensitive to fragrances might have to be more careful though.

Price-wise, I think it is reasonable at $33 for 180ml, almost the same price as my other Avene cleansers.

All in all, a good all-in-one cleanser perfect for the lazy day or days when you get home so late you just want to quickly cleanse your skin and go to bed.

Review: Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion W SPF15

Review:
I can't say I like this Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion W SPF15, unfortunately. Water is the first ingredient and alcohol is the second. So the moment I applied this to my skin, it smelled strongly of alcohol. The tingly effect of alcohol (and alcohol itself) irritates my skin and makes my skin feel very uncomfortable. The moment I felt this, I layered on Avene's Skin Recovery Cream.

Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion W SPF15 has SPF 15 but definitely not enough sunblock protection. It is a must to apply another layer of sunscreen over the emulsion if you are going outdoors. Honestly, I think if you are getting the moisturiser from the Shiseido White Lucent series, buy the one without SPF so you can use it both day and night. There is no need to buy separate day and night creams.

The texture is runny and can spread easily. The emulsion absorbs reasonably well (mostly due to alcohol, which helps with absorption). So this is suitable for normal to oily skin. Those with dry skin or sensitive skin should definitely avoid this emulsion as the alcohol will end up further drying up your skin.

In terms of brightening ability, this emulsion alone cannot do much. For brightening effects, it is best to buy the Shiseido White Lucent Intensive Spot Targeting Serum instead (word of caution, this serum reeks of alcohol too).

I wouldn't recommend purchasing this product. Alcohol content is too high. Brightening effects are limited.

Review:
I bought this mask when my eczema was at its worst. Full red, slightly swollen, itching and stinging, dry patches all around my cheeks, forehead, jaw area and near my chin area. Basically everywhere except my nose and central chin area, i suspect because the t-zone is slightly oilier so it acted as a barrier against my eczema.

I was using Avene Skin Balancing Cream but I felt it was not rich enough and my skin was still very very dry. I read the instructions of the Avene Instant Soothing Moisture Mask and it said that if skin is highly irritated, the mask can be used as a daily treatment for a week before reducing usage to once a week. So what I did was a used a thick layer of Avene Instant Smoothing Moisture Mask, didn't wipe any of it off after 10-15 minutes and layered the Avene Skin Balancing Cream on top (yes, that was how dry and irritated my skin was). After doing that for a few days and applying topical medication, my eczema improved.

Thereafter, with less severe eczema or any sign of skin redness. I noticed this mask did help to calm my skin down. And it did help alleviate skin dryness, which is a good thing as my skin gets really dry when it is sensitive/irritated.

When my skin is at a normal condition, I noticed that not much effects is observed. So I would only use this mask when I have eczema/sensitivity/irritation/dryness. If your skin is normal or combination with no sensitivity. I think you would not notice much effects with this mask. But if you have any of the above mentioned skin signs, then this mask is helpful.

One word of caution, this mask does contain potential pore clogging ingredients, like mineral oil and other really rich and emollient ingredients. So I would use it with caution if you have oily skin or are prone to clogged pores. I have read that some people wash off the mask completely with water to prevent getting clogged pores. I don't do this and only dab any excess off with tissue if it feels oily as I need the oiliness to combat my dry skin.

All in all, great mask to have on hand for any emergencies, to calm skin sensitivities, dryness and eczema.

My Experience: Dry Skin, Use Sleeping Mask as a Serum

My skin type is normally combination, slightly oily at the t-zone and dehydrated at the cheeks.

Recently, my skin has been very dry and even flaky at the nose area. So I have been trying all means and ways to rehydrate my skin. Dry skin is a pain as it hurts at times when using certain skin products and causes my skin to be more sensitive than usual and my eczema sometimes flares up as well.

The routine I have been sticking with has been working well:

Cleansing: Shu Uemura cleansing oil. Avene gel cleanser
Toner: Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion 2
Serum: Laneige Water Sleeping Pack
Moisturiser: La Mer Creme de La Mer

Yes, I have been using Laneige Water Sleeping Pack as a serum, before moisturiser every night and I find it works nicely as a hydrating serum and a wonderful water boost for my skin. It takes a while to absorb and sink in, but it's like I am using a hydrating mask and then using the Creme de la Mer to seal the moisture in. I find that this works better than the other way round: Creme de la Mer then Laneige Water Sleeping Pack. I can't explain why but the effect is just different. In the mornings, I wake up with everything absorbed. My skin is not oily in the mornings but nicely moisturised. Unfortunately, by mid day my skin gets dry again (might be the office air con).

I would only recommend this routine if your skin is really dry or dehydrated like mine as it is this routine is not only rich in moisture but also in oil content. Dry skin means lacking in both oil and moisture, dehydrated skin lacks moisture but not oil. The Creme is really rich in the sense that it is very emollient and acts as a good barrier to prevent moisture loss. This is why I always have a tub of creme de la mer with me cos its the best to use in such skin changes and emergency situations like sensitive reactions.

So, if you have dry skin, you can try using your sleeping mask as a serum before an emollient (rich, oily) moisturiser. It might work better than using it as the last step.

I really like this sunscreen. I used up one tube and bought another 2 more as there as a 20% discount at the pharmacy. This Therapeutic Dermatologic Formula Age Defense System PA+++ UVA/UVB SPF50+ Sunscreen has high UVA and UVB protection, which is good and is also good to use after chemical peel as it does not irritate the skin, and it did not cause any irritation or sensitivity when I used this when I had patches of eczema on my face.

A lot of sunscreens tend to leave a white cast, an oily sheen or make my face oil up after a few hours. I find that I have to powder my face to keep it oil-free. But I don't have any problems with TDF Age Defense System PA+++ UVA/UVB SPF50+ Sunscreen. It has a creamy texture and easy to blend into my skin. There is no white cast and no oily sheen. It also does not dry out my skin. I am sensitive to avobenzones/Parsol, so it is good that the TDF sunscreen does not contain this ingredient.

Another good thing is that it absorbs really quick. I spread it out evenly and after a minute or so, the sunscreen is absorbed. Because I use the required 1ml on my face, fast absorption is important as I don't like the feeling of a sunscreen sitting on top of my skin and waiting before I can powder my face to reduce the oily sheen. With Therapeutic Dermatologic Formula Age Defense System PA+++ UVA/UVB SPF50+ Sunscreen, I don't have to wait long for it to absorb and I usually don't powder anymore.

A down side is, the sunscreen rubs off into white rubbings (like eraser dust). Especially after half a day and I swipe my face or rub my eye I find white rubbings on my face so I have to clean it off and I think I am also removing my sun protection. I think this is due to the silicone, but I may be wrong.

As a comparison, La Roche Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 sunscreens provide good protection but leave an oily sheen on my skin. L'oreal UV Perfect SPF 50, which I was using previously left a bit of white cast and some oiliness. Both takes a while for it to settle into my skin/absorb properly.

I took a break from blogging and let my skin have a rest.

I stuck to a simpler skincare regime of double cleansing, toning, serum (one type per night, whitening or hydrating) and moisturiser. Sometimes I also skip the serum step. I think this simplified routine creates less burden on my skin. In the morning, I either just rinse with water or cleanse then follow with a light moisturiser and sunscreen.

I have finished some products and will be reviewing them very soon!

Review: Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50/PA+++

The Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50/PA+++ High Potency Active Protection sunscreen has its fair share of raves online. Some people compare it to L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++, which isn't surprising as both are from the same parent company, L'oreal. It has quite a good rating on makeupalley so I thought it would be a good sunscreen to try.

I think Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50/PA+++ has a lighter and more watery texture compared to L'oreal UV Perfect, which is more creamy in texture. Both have the same shiny finish, which I don't like. The Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50/PA+++ leaves a white cast on my skin and I usually can't use the required 1.25ml because it seemed too shiny, oily and white. After I let the sunscreen settle in, the finish is slightly better.

For the price, around, S$80, I would have expected a better sunscreen. If I were to choose between Lancome UV Expert GN-Shield SPF 50/PA+++ and L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++, I would choose L'oreal. It is much cheaper and I find it easier to layer more sunscreen on compared to Lancome.

Rant: Dr. Wu Clinical Skincare

I recently bought the Dr. Wu Intensive Hydrating Serum with Hyaluronic Acid 10ml, which came with a 5ml Intensive Hydrating Gel with Hyaluronic Acid 5ml and one piece of Microinject Hydrating Mask with Hyaluronic Acid.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the Dr. Wu Intensive Hydrating Serum was the bottle was only half full and the product was yellowish in colour (see pictures above, taken with my handphone, not altered in any way). I checked with my La Mer Lifting Essence, which is a 9ml bottle (and came full), and with Dr GL's Skin Repair Serum, which is 5ml each and also came full. Now this confirmed that I only received less than half a bottle of product and that it was possibly spoilt.

So I emailed Evance Singapore, which is the company that distributes Dr. Wu Skincare. They kindly offered a product exchange as I had thrown my receipt away.

This is where my rant starts:

1. Tardiness. The lady who called me arranged for a product exchange on Friday at 11am. At 10.50am, she called to say she will be arriving at 11.15am, with no apology for her lateness. I went to wait for her at 11.15am so she wouldn't have to wait for me to come downstairs when she arrives but she only arrived at 11.25am. I honestly dislike waiting for people and if I made the effort to be early, I wonder why someone who is in an industry where service is important did not make an effort to.

2. Excuses. I had no intention of writing this blog post but this was what irked me so I had to write about it. When the lady opened the bottle in question, she firstly gave the excuse that some sea emollient ingredient changes colour so the serum is yellowish. And that since there is one more year and no smell, it is okay to use. Well, I'm not going to argue against that since it seemed spoilt at one glance and I definitely wasn't going to risk another bout of eczema just to try that out so I didn't even open the bottle. BUT if your ingredient is not stable why give it such a long shelf life. She was the one who said it has been sitting on the shelf for a while and it is a dropper bottle so that's why it changed. Since this is an ingredient problem, I cannot fault the company.

But, it is the next thing that really sounded ridiculous. That this half a bottle of serum IS actually 10ml. I did my research beforehand so how could you say such a thing. This definitely is not the first time I bought a product in a dropper bottle and I have other bottles to compare with! Moreover, I am not any ignorant consumer who will accept such an explanation. It just sounded like excuses to me. She said because it is a dropper bottle, they didn't/can't fill it to the brim. Look at BioBeauty's Advanced Hydrating Serum (pic below), which has hyaluronic Acid as the main ingredient, very similar to Dr. Wu's intensive hydrating Serum. Same texture, same viscosity, same use. This came FULL. What do you mean that it cannot be filled to the brim because it is a dropper bottle? When I told her the about the 9ml and 5ml bottles I compared the serum with, she then gave the excuse that it might have evaporated because it has been on the shelf for a while since the expiry date is in one year's time. And that all the products are like that. All?? Then I don't think I will be buying anything from this brand.

All that needed to happen was to exchange the product and acknowledge that the product is indeed half full and yellowish and not excuses to prove they are not in the wrong. Being late was already disappointing and then excuse after excuse that made me feel that I was the one who is unreasonable to ask for an exchange in product. I mean, look at the pictures and who wouldn't feel shortchanged after spending money on a product that I dare not even try or let alone use on my face.

I can safely say that they have permanently lost a customer. And to think that I had products from Dr. Wu skincare line that I have been wanting to try. All I have left to say is companies should check the quality of their products before selling it to customers. And us customers should always check if we are sold substandard products.

Review: Lancome Blanc Expert Ultimate Whitening Hydrating Emulsion - Moist

Review:
I got this in KL and tried it out. I have this in Moist, there is another version called Very Moist for dry skin. Moist suits all skin types. The prices in KL are about $10 cheaper than in Singapore.

In my opinion, to achieve good whitening results, you should use a good high concentration serum. And with moisturisers, one that hydrates well. So I usually don't buy skincare products in an entire range - from cleansers to serum to moisturiser and mask. I like to buy products that are specific to my concern, i.e. cleanser to clean well and not so much to clean and whiten since this just serves to increase the price.

Anyway, since it was cheaper and KL had this shopping vibe which put me in a spending mood. I like that it has a runny/watery consistency and yet moisturising enough. It doesn't absorb fast and leaves a bit of a sticky feel. It takes a while before the stickiness disappears.

I noticed brighter skin tone but in 2 weeks, no lightening of brown/dark red pimple scars. For 2 weeks of use, I definitely wasn't expecting any changes to my skin but good that my skin was brighter.

For the price, I wasn't impressed. I think it cost around S$100. I didn't like that I smelled alcohol in this. And the fact that alcohol is the third ingredient. I don't fancy having alcohol as long as it is among the first 5 ingredients in my moisturisers (and eye creams and sunscreen. Alcohol in toner is fine for me though since it is in contact with my skin for less than 5 sec), which tells me there is a lot of it and increases the chances of alcohol dehydrating my skin in the long run. For the price I am paying, I rather have better ingredients. Granted, the purpose of alcohol might be to create a more runny consistency to make an emulsion and to help the skin absorb the lotion, but I prefer not to have so much of it.

All in all, expensive moisturiser with good brightening properties. It would have been better if it didn't contain so much alcohol.

Review: L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++

The L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++ I am reviewing is the transparent skin (white) one. There are two other versions to even out skin tone (beige) and an anti-dullness (purple) one. I bought this as part of the l'oreal deals that heal charity deal. I think the original price is $21.90.

I heard raves of this sunscreen from a friend who only uses this sunscreen so I thought it was a good time to buy and try it out. One bottle, 30ml, lasted me about a month.

What I like about L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++ is it contains l'oreal's patented Mexoryl™ SX + XL filters and Activa-Cell™, which are supposed to provide broad spectrum sun protection.

There is no white cast and I am able to apply the required 1.25ml of sunscreen for proper protection - some sunscreens are too thick or oily or are too white to apply this amount. The sunscreen is in the form of a lotion-cream. Thicker than a lotion but not oily and rich like a cream. It absorbs fast and doesn't take much time applying and waiting for it to settle into the skin. I didn't experience any sensitivity with this sunscreen.

What I don't like is L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++ leaves an oily finish when I use the required amount. When I use lesser, I do see the dewy finish people rave about but that is just not sufficient protection. Especially since the weather is so crazily hot these days, unless I use some loose powder, I come home with a shiny face, which I dislike.

I think L'oreal UV Perfect SPF50/PA+++ is a good sunscreen if you stay indoors most of the time and want sufficient sun protection. Since UV rays can pass through windows, it is best to slap on sunscreen even at work. I probably won't use this if I am staying outdoors as it makes me oil up. I used this on a trip to KL and didn't like the oiliness.

All in all, average sunscreen for a cheap price especially when there is a sale. I am neutral about this product, meaning I don't mind re-purchasing if I have to other options of sunscreen to try out. But then again, the market is full of sunscreen brands so I probably won't buy this again any time soon. Off to try Therapeutic Dermatologic Formula PA+++ UVA/UVB SPF50+ Sunscreen from their Age Defense System next, plus RoC Soleil Protexion SPF50 sunscreen in the waiting after that.

My Experience: DrGL Skin Repair Serum

I didn't want to review this DrGL Skin Repair Serum for the longest time, so I decided to just write about my experience with this product. Reason being, I never finished using the product. I know this is highly raved by many people, which is the main reason why I bought it. The DrGL Skin Repair Serum contains some active plant stem cell extracts (you can read more about it at her website here : http://www.drgl.com/index.php/main/product/18/25). Price: $98 for 10ml.

I think the DrGL Skin Repair Serum did have some effects on my skin. I observed a slightly faster skin healing rate, that is faster healing of active pimples and faster fading of pimple scars. But wasn't a miracle product. I think AHAs work as well as the serum at a fraction of the price. The BA said that her customers experience this tightening of their skin when they use it. But I didn't experience any of that.

What I do like about the product is that it is so lightweight, like water. Just some light patting and everything is absorbed really quickly.

The main reason why I didn't like it was that I had to keep this serum in the refrigerator. To me, products that have to be refrigerated are a chore because I have to walk downstairs to the kitchen just to get a few drops of product then walk back up to complete the rest of my skincare routine. And I don't like to have to touch things and get my hands dirty when I apply skincare. So it really isn't the contents of the product that I don't like, but the fact that I have to keep it in the fridge.

And how I knew for sure I didn't really like the product wasn't only because I couldn't see any significant effects on my skin but was when I started doubling the amount I use just so I could finish using it quickly. I never finished the serum, by the way, which is why I didn't want to review it. I had the patience to use it for about 2-3 weeks every night but I just kept forgetting to use it after that because it is in the fridge and when I remember I just want to quickly use it just so I can finish it. After 2 months of the product sitting in the fridge, I just used it on my neck, for the sake of finishing the product.

At $98 for 10ml, it is quite expensive. The price increased after the change in packaging. Dr Georgia Lee has successfully built a reputation of trustworthiness so as a consumer, her name just seems to equate to a good high quality product. Unfortunately, I didn't experience that great an effect to warrant another purchase. I think this serum will be good for those with a skincare concern that needs to be addressed, eg pimples, scarring or anti-aging concerns. I've heard good things about the Collagen Essence, and I might buy that the next time.

(Disclaimer: She didn't ask me to buy this serum when I saw her at her clinic, so maybe I have no real need to use this serum, but her BAs at the counter like to rave about this so I bought it to try. They say that their customers buy a lot at one go because it is a really good product with tightening effect. So, I honestly think that if there is no skin concern to address, I don't think the effects are visible. But if I were to use it, it would be like I'm buying insurance for my skin.)

My Experience: My Skin and Eczema

I recently developed some red itchy patches around my face that refused to go away so I went to see a dermatologist. It was diagnosed to be atopic eczema, which will be recurring for the next few years. The most annoying thing is, my eczema only occurs on my face and nowhere else. How terrible is that.

So I have been using the steroid cream the dermatologist prescribed and the eczema has been getting better, except that they now grow at different places where I don't apply the cream. First, they concentrated around my cheeks, now they appear on my chin. So I have these ugly red patches and there is little I can do.

I tried to simplify my skincare routine. I cut down the chemical AHAs and control what I use on my face. I am using California Baby Calendula Cream, cos calendula is supposed to be good for eczema and rashes. And if a baby can use it, so can I! It is a bit rich for me. I have been noticing some clogged pores after using this day and night for the past few weeks. But if it calms the eczema, I rather suffer some clogs that I can remove without using any medication than have to rely on steroids.

My eczema isn't bothering me so much now and the itch is now bearable. I am now slowly introducing more items into my routine so that I can finish my stash of skincare (I am also applying stuff that used to be for my face onto my neck - to finish them and to help with neck lines!).

So maybe reviews will come a bit slower since I am using lesser stuff now, but I still have products I have yet to review - La Mer The Tonic, Avene Diacneal, Avene Eluage Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate (liking this!). So check back soon!

I bought this after seeing Naruko Magnolia Brightening And Firming Cream on Nu Ren Wo Zui Da show. This brand from Taiwan and is the product of skincare guru Niu Er lao shi. I looked up the product and saw that it had a comprehensive list of beneficial ingredients. It seemed like an all-in-one anti-aging and moisturising cream.

Naruko Magnolia Brightening And Firming Cream has a light cream texture. It doesn't absorb too easily and requires a bit of massaging, which I don't mind since Naruko Magnolia Brightening And Firming Cream is an anti-aging cream, it is also a good time to do some lifting facial massages. I am, however, not too fond of the smell. I know it is probably the magnolia smell but I thought it is a bit too strong. It was a bit uncomfortable to keep smelling the cream the first time but I got used to the smell after a few uses.

After applying and massaging the Naruko Magnolia Brightening And Firming Cream in to my skin, it absorbs but still leaves my skin feeling oily. A clear sign this is too rich for my skin. I have combination skin type, dehydrated with oily t-zone. So I concentrate on my cheek area before applying the rest to the t-zone. Even then, I still feel an oily film on my skin. Sometimes, after a few hours, before bed, I blot off the oil by pressing a piece of tissue into my skin, without rubbing any cream off. The website states that this is suitable for all skin types, but I don't think I will recommend this for oily skin types. Dry and normal skin types will suit this Naruko Magnolia Brightening And Firming Cream better.

It is quite an expensive cream. I cannot remember the price but I think it was around $60+, definitely more expensive than the average cream from Niu Er's brands. I think it is too expensive to purchase again since it is a bit too oily for me.

Review: Hanskin Intense Eye Cream

Review:

I bought this from Korea, as part of a pack which consists of their best selling bb creams and another night cream. The description highlighted the ingredient Argireline, which is supposedly something like a topical botox. So I had expectations that this Hanskin Intense Eye Cream will help with my lines.

The texture is cream-like, absorbs relatively fast but feels like there is a film on my skin after that. I suspect there are silicones in this eye cream due to the texture. It is common to have silicones in anti-wrinkle products as they act as temporary fillers such that wrinkles look like they disappeared or reduced, but it is mainly just a cosmetic improvement due to the silicone filler. I cannot confirm this as I do not have the ingredients list and I cannot find it anywhere online. Another downside about not having the ingredients list is that there is no way to tell how much active ingredients are in this eye cream. So I cannot tell how much or little Argireline or phytocollagen this eye cream contains.

Needless to say, this eye cream did little for my lines. Hydration-wise, it is very average. I sometimes have to follow with another eye cream if my eye area is dryer.

All in all, Hanskin Intense Eye Cream is a below average. Good for those who needs just a basic eye cream or during the summer time. I probably would not use this Hanskin Intense Eye Cream during the winter. I will not re-purchase.

Review:

I bought this eye cream as I wanted something with Vitamin C, which is a wonderful antioxidant and has good anti-aging properties. One thing about Vit C is that can be difficult to find a product that is stable and will not oxidise too quickly. La Roche-Posay Active C Eyes contains 5% L-ascorbic acid, which is a sufficient percentage to see results with use.

I like that this product is stable and I do not have to store it in the fridge. I have my La Roche-Posay Active C Eyes for a few months now and it is still a murky white colour when I squeeze my eye cream out for use. Sometimes, when I look into the cap, there will be some dark yellow residue of oxidised eye cream. When that happens, I will clean it with a cotton bud so as not to affect the rest of the product in the tube. The packaging is a metal tube which is great for preventing oxidation of the product and gives you control over the amount of eye cream you want to use.

When I first started using La Roche-Posay Active C Eyes, there would be a stinging sensation around my eye area and my skin would turn red. This does not last long, so I continued using. About 2 weeks later, the stinging and redness reduced in frequency and only occurred occasionally. After 4 weeks, I did not experience any more stinging or redness. I think my skin was getting used to the Vitamin C.

Effects-wise, I saw a slight improvement in my lines, but only after prolonged use. There was hardly any effect on my dark eye circles (I don't have bad dark eye circles but if I have an all-nighter, the La Roche-Posay Active C Eyes didn't help much).

I like that it absorbs really quickly and provides enough hydration for my eye area. The texture is gel-like and when applied onto the skin, turns a bit watery. So I did not experience any clogging or milia seeds with the use of La Roche-Posay Active C Eyes.

All in all, I like this eye cream mainly because of the L-ascorbic acid. I like to use products with clinically proven ingredients. I think the price is S$59.90, which is quite expensive. I would wait for a discount at Watsons/guardian or hospital pharmacies like CGH.

When i blogged about my current day skincare routine, I forgot to include the eye cream that I use so I decided to do a separate post on eye creams that I use nowadays.

I use La Roche-Posay Active C Eye cream in the morning as I want to use a retinoid at night. And I read that we should not use Vit C and Vit A together as they deactivate each other.

LRP Active C Eye cream absorbs fast so its great when I have to rush in the morning. Vit C is also good for enhancing sun protection. LRP Active C used to sting my eyes but that rarely happens nowadays. It is good as it is a stable Vit C product.

I use Avene Eluage Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate at night as an eye serum then a richer eye cream like Creme de La Mer (I know, it's technically not an eye cream but Creme de La Mer works everywhere and it works nicely on my eyes but it can be too rich for my whole face). Avene Eluage Anti-Wrinkle Concentrate has been working well for me. I have been using this for a few months and I am seeing improvements in my lines.

I bought Hanskin Intense Eye Cream from Korea, together with some Hanskin BB creams. It contains Argireline, which is a derivative of Botox. It supposedly helps reduce expression lines. I just started using this not long ago so I will monitor and see how it works for me.

Review: Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque

This is a popular Holy Grail deep cleansing mask for many, scoring high points on makeupalley. I bought this at one of the shops at People's Park Complex, I think. I am not very familiar with the chinatown area. But I think this is available online as well. The price was around $13+, but I remember I bought it at a discount so it was around $11.

I think this is quite value for money, with 226g. The tube I purchased had a bonus of 33% more mask. So it makes it a cheap and good deep cleansing mask. The mask is light green in colour, paste-like in texture. It can be difficult to spread the first one or two times you use it but the trick is to apply a thin layer by spreading the mask out evenly over a wide area. I don't think there is a need to apply a thick layer as it just takes longer to dry up, dehydrating the skin even more. It dries up quite quickly.

This reminds me of the Niu Er BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask, they function in the same way. Both dry up and suck the oil out of my pores. When the mask is dry, you can actually see the oil spots that were secreted from the pores. I prefer this Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque as it is less harsh on the skin and my skin does not feel overly dry after washing it off. My skin feels very clean after masking. I will still follow up with a hydrating mask.

The mask contains sulphur, which is good for drying up pimples. I sometimes use this Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque to spot treat my pimples. I apply directly on the pimple then leave it on overnight. The pimple doesn't disappear overnight, but it helps it become less inflamed.

But because Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque contains sulphur, I smell the sulphur more than the mint. I read reviews saying it smells of mint but to me, the sulphur smell is more significant and I sometimes can still smell it the next day, even after washing the mask off the night before. I don't really like this smell but it does remind me of some pimple cream I used when I was much younger.

All in all, great mask for the price. It does help dry up pimples, draw out impurities and make your skin feel very clean, but there was no difference in my blackheads and pores, contrary to the product description.

Review: Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel

Properties

My Review:

I used Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel as a starter to AHAs. There is a lot of information about the product on the website but they did not tell me the most important thing I want to know - the percentage of AHA/BHAs. I bought the product anyway since the sales assistant said this is gentler than Avene Diacneal, which I was hoping to use eventually, but was worried it might be too strong for my skin.

I eased slowly into this product, by which I mean once every 3 days for a week. I didn't feel much on my skin so I increased to alternate days. I stopped using the product if I felt any redness or dryness or discomfort. Only when my skin was back to normal then I continued using it. I did not experience any purging or peeling (I experienced both with Diacneal).

As mentioned, I do not like that fact that the % of AHAs and BHAs are not reported as it makes it difficult to compare across products. The reason why I say this is because I experience some stinging every time I use this Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel but I don't experience any stinging with Therapeutic Dermatologic Formula's AHA Revitalizing Gel 15, which is supposedly stronger at 15% Glycolic Acid. The sales assistant at the Avene counter was sure Cleanance K has less than 10% AHAs.

I read that there is higher Salicylic Acid (BHA) with this new formula, which is a good thing as BHAs are oil-soluble and can penetrate the pores to clean them out. I did have the old Cleanance K ingredients list to compare and indeed the Salicylic Acid was higher up on the list, but then again still no % indicated.

I feel that Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel did help with my skin. My skin was smoother but there was not that great an improvement. I think that Avene Diacneal gave me more results. So I would recommend Diacneal as a treatment if you have acne problems, and Cleanance K for milder skin imperfections like blackheads, or as a maintenance after stopping Diacneal or if Diacneal is too harsh for your skin.

I think it is also great that Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel contains some hydrating properties. The old Cleanace K formula made me oil up after a couple of hours due to dehydration of my skin. So I think the new formula is indeed an improved version.

All in all, it is a good product that gave some results but I probably would not repurchase as results were not significant. Avene Cleanance K Cream-gel does seem like it would be good for those with sensitive skin, but do ask for a sample before buying as it does sting a bit.

Skincare-holic's Skincare Tip #8: My Skincare Routine-Day

Recently I made a lot of changes to my skincare routine. I started incorporating Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and retinoids as they are clinically proven to improve skin conditions like acne and wrinkles, resulting in clearer skin. I simplified my skincare routine as a result.

Day:
Cleanser: Avene Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser/ Vichy Essentielles Foaming Facial Cleanser/ La Mer The Cleansing Lotion
Toner: Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion 2/ La Mer The Tonic
Sunscreen: La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream

Comments: My day routine is much simpler now than before. I stopped using a moisturiser before my sunscreen as the LRP Uvidea Cream is moisturising enough and adding a moisturiser would make my skin oily. I also read some articles saying that sunscreen should be applied to bare skin to allow the chemical sunscreen to react with the skin in order for it to work well. Also, sunscreen - when tested in the lab - is used on bare skin, so to get maximum protection, sunscreen should be the first thing applied. (I got this information from dermtv.com, there are many useful videos there).

At times, especially when I have any pimple scars, I will use a whitening serum with Vit C before my sunscreen. Now, this is another source of debate. Some people say that antioxidants and whitening products should only be used at night as whitening ingredients make the skin more sensitive to the sun and might make the skin darker. Some also advocate that antioxidants be used at night as the sun deactivates the antioxidants.

Then there are those (for example Skinceuticals), who manufacture serums like Skinceuticals C E Ferulic, which consists of antioxidants like Vit C, E and Ferulic to enhance sunscreen protection.

In my opinion, as long as adequate sunscreen is applied, I think it is okay to use whitening products like Vit C. By adequate, I mean 1.25ml on the face alone. I often feel that when I try to apply this amount, the LRP Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream becomes shiny and makes my skin look oily. So I am again on a lookout for a better sunscreen product.

Review: Vichy Essentielles Foaming Facial Cleanser

Vichy provided the Essentielles range of products for my review. I will be providing my honest opinions.

I don't really buy counter brand cleansers as cleansers only remain on my skin for a minute or so and then gets washed off. This means any amount of whitening or antioxidant ingredients would not get absorbed into the skin. With all the dirt and oil, I don't want any ingredients going inwards, just outwards is enough. So as long as cleansers clean well, don't leave my skin dry or tight, don't make my skin sensitive and are cost effective, they are good enough for me.

I think this Vichy Essentielles Foaming Facial cleanser met the above criteria. The cleanser foams easily and a little goes a long way. The foam is dense and fine, not big and fluffy like Fancl Washing Powder but it is good for a clean wash.

This cleanser contains Rose polyphenols. Rose is known for its soothing properties. My skin did not have any sensitive reactions to this cleanser. I was happy to see Glycerin as the second ingredient, which explained why my skin was feeling comfortable after the wash and not tight or dry. There is also no SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) or Parabens.

All in all, this is a basic cleanser, which cleans well, does not leave skin feeling dry or tight, and did not cause any sensitivity reaction. It is affordable at $11.90 for 100ml. It is great for people looking for a basic cleanser without a heavy price tag.

Skinceuticals Discount @ CGH Pharmacy

I was browsing through the CGH pharmacy website, intending to get another tube of La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream, which is on discount now.

I was eyeing the Therapeutic Dermalogic Formula AHA Revitalizing Lotion 10% but it wasn't on discount, unfortunately.

I chanced upon Skinceuticals and they are having 15% discount now! I am planning to buy the Skinceuticals C E Ferulic or Phloretin CF. Anyone knows which one is better?

Review: Fancl Moist & Vital Mask (Limited Edition)

This is a limited edition mask from Fancl, but I think it is still available in stores, so go out to grab it if you want to try it out.

Fancl Moist & Vital Mask is a facial mask with a cream-type essence. Indeed, when I removed the mask from the packaging the first time, I thought: what a strange mask material. It felt plasticky but adhered nicely to the skin. There is a lot of excess essence when I removed the mask from the packaging and when I squeezed the mask material after using the mask for 15 mins, more essence was squeezed out, so the mask is nicely saturated with essence and because of the texture of the essence, there is no issue of dripping essence. It's the first time I am using a cream-type essence mask. The "cream" is more like an emulsion than a cream. It is very rich and would suit dry skin the best. I thought it was too rich for my combination skin and I only used this once a month. Although the mask is rich, it didn't cause any break outs or clogged pores.

After using the mask, my skin was very moisturised. It took more massaging than other masks for the essence to be absorbed. But then again, my face was still oily with the cream essence after massaging. After half an hour, I blotted the remaining oil with a tissue paper. I couldn't bring myself to follow the mask with a moisturiser, so I patted on some Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising Lotion.

This Fancl Moist & Vital Mask contains HTC Collagen and Hydroxyproline , which enhances collagen production. And Hyaluronic Acids for long-lasting, intensive hydration.

This is a wonderful mask but too rich for my skin - very hydrating but too oily. It would be great for dry skin or if you're in a dry climate.

Review: Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++

It contains no perfumes, coloring, mineral oils or UV ray absorbing substances.
Protection Milk comes in two levels of protection: "SPF30 PA++" - for protecting you from the sun during your daily routine - and "SPF50 PA+++" - for people who like the outdoors but who definitely don't like getting burned.

I tried a sample of Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++ and the first time I tried it, I loved it so much I went out to get the full sized bottle from Isetan Wisma where Dr. Ci:Labo has a counter.

I have been wanting to find a sunscreen that doesn't feel like a sunscreen on my face. I don't know if you experience this, but when i use sunblock at home, I usually can feel this layer of sunblock on my face, which I dislike. Normally, sunscreens make my skin a bit suffocated especially if I cannot set it with powder. (It's strange if I have to set my sunscreen with makeup at home, and at home days are no-makeup days to allow skin to breathe and take a break!)

So I have once thought of getting a day cream with UVA/UVB protection, but could never find any suitable ones. That is until I tried a sample of Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++. I have had this sample for a while but never got down to trying it until I was home and I used my Avene Cleanance K in the day, which is an AHA/BHA cream-gel, and I needed sun protection. I am conscious of applying sunscreen when I use AHA/BHAs and any retinoids, which explains my need for a sunscreen that is comfortable for home use.

Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++ feels like a moisturiser and in fact, when I use this Moisture Milk, I skip moisturiser. Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++ alone sufficiently moisturised my combination skin and I feel that people with normal or even slightly dryer skin can also use this sunscreen with additional moisturiser below.

The texture of this Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++ feels like a cream-gel. Quite light, spreads easily with no tugging (due to the silica) and also absorbs fast. Most importantly, no stuffy feeling or feeling that there is a layer of something on my skin that I need to wash off.

Lastly, it is also great that this UV moisture milk contains alpha arbutin, to help with whitening as well as collagen and hyaluron for moisture. All three are beneficial ingredients for the skin. It's also great that alcohol is not one of the first few ingredients like in La Roche-Posay Anthelios. So no need to worry about alcohol dehydrating my skin.

Cons:
If only this were a perfect product! But these are just slight dislikes I can overlook. The UVA protection is only PA++, which is considered insufficient for me. But since I only intend to use this at home, I am able to overlook this (Note: UVA rays can penetrate windows into homes). Another thing would be the silica content. I know of people who break out due to silica. So I am worried that this will be comedogenic in the long run. I will be monitoring.

Price of Dr. Ci:Labo UV & White Moisture Milk SPF 30 PA++ is S$51 for 30ml, which is considered quite expensive for a small sized product. The price of the SPF50 one has PA+++ (better protection) and is slightly more expensive at S$57 for 30ml. I should go back down to the counter to try out the SPF 50 one, I am hoping it is just as lovable as the SPF30. If the feeling on my skin is similar, I will definitely purchase for daily outdoor use.

I read good things about the Laneige Hydra Solution Essence, but I don't think it suits my combination skin very much. Perhaps I should have purchased the Water Bank essence instead (that one should be lighter but I'm not sure cos I haven't tried Water Bank yet).

Reason why I say it may be unsuitable for my combination skin is because after 4 hours, my skin became oily, especially around my t-zone. I use one pump each time. I passed this on to my mom instead as I was worried it might be too rich/oily and make me break out.

This Hydra Solution Essence did not activate my sensitive skin but there is a strong fragrance, which seems to be present in most Laneige products.

The texture of this essence is interesting. When you pump the Laneige Hydra Solution Essence out, it looks like it has this silicone-type of texture. Then when you spread it onto your skin, it becomes almost watery. After massaging it in, the essence turns from watery to oily. It's quite intriguing to feel these texture changes and this is what makes skincare interesting.

I suppose this Hydra Solution Essence would suit dry-normal skin types better. It made my combination skin oily but thankfully, no breakouts occurred. I thought the BA should have better advised me regarding the suitability of this product for my skin type, but it's good that my mom is able to use it.

Review: Etude House Hand Bouquet Rich Collagen Hand Mask

Okay, I totally bought this just for the fun of it, hahaha. I thought it looked interesting so I got myself a few pairs. The mask comes packed with a pair of hand masks and a pair of gloves, sealed separately. The packaging looks exactly like the one in the picture above, complete with the acu pressure massage points.

This mask contain 2% collagen and Arbutin, which helps in whitening. It also, however, contains mineral oil as one of the first few ingredients.

How to use: Wash and dry hands. Open the mask up - they are actually paper gloves soaked with mask solution, so wear them like gloves and then wear the plastic gloves that are sealed in the second packet.

The good thing about this hand mask is that they provide plastic gloves, which allowed me to continue surfing the internet. But more importantly, the plastic gloves make your hands feel warm inside, similar to a steamer inside (but not that hot, don't worry!) so this increases absorption of the mask solution, making this a more effective hand mask.

I liked that my hands felt soft and smooth even after a few hours. And surprisingly, I like this hand mask! I bought it for fun and I remember it wasn't cheap (price around S$4-5 each pair?). I might not repurchase cos it's mainly for the interesting experience but if you pass by Etude House, why not give this a try!

My review:
I like this Laneige Power Essential Skin Refiner_EX as it combines both a toner (second step of Clinique three step system) and a lotion (the kind you find in Japanese skincare routines).

This Laneige Power Essential Skin Refiner_EX acts as a toner because it has properties to gently exfoliate skin ( you can also enhance exfoliation by the using cotton pads) and hence regulate skin's renewal rate. According to the BA, the willow bark extract acts as a mild BHA to exfoliate the skin. I also liked that it didn't smell strongly of alcohol.

The Laneige Power Essential Skin Refiner_EX also left my skin sufficiently hydrated. After using this Skin Refiner, I didn't immediately follow with a serum or moisturiser but just sat there testing whether my skin was hydrated enough not to feel tight or dry, and it didn't.

The Laneige Power Essential Skin Refiner_EX has a texture of a very light serum. It is almost similar to Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturising Lotion, except that the Laneige one has a stronger fragrance.

The fragrance is the only thing I didn't like about this product. The smell is pleasant enough but I wished it wasn't that strong.

All in all, I like that this Laneige Power Essential Skin Refiner_EX provides the exfoliating benefits of a toner and the hydrating effects of a lotion. It would have been better if the smell wasn't so strong.

New Product: Kose Infinity Realizing White XX Serum

I am going for the 20th Feb talk show (Many thanks to Sophia!!) and I am quite excited!

I planned to purchase the new Kose Infinity Realizing White XX Serum, so I dropped by the nearest Kose counter on my way home.

This is not a review, just some initial thoughts about this new product:
- The Kose Infinity Realizing White XX Serum is quite unlike other serums because when I first pumped it out, the serum looked more like a lotion/emulsion.
- Absorbs quite fast and was surprisingly lighter than I thought it would be due to the lotion-like base. The serum left my skin slightly sticky, but was acceptable as the stickiness/oiliness was gone after moisturiser.
- Uses Kojic acid, which is a whitening agent. I have yet to see whitening effects yet as I just started using this. I will review this Kose Infinity Realizing White XX Serum again soon.

The counter I went to has run out of the debut price of $128 for the Kose Infinity Realizing White XX Serum, so they are selling it at the normal price of $148.

There are other Infinity sets available and I am thinking of purchasing the Kose Infinity Cream Excellent set, which is a night cream that contains Hyaluronic Acid (sounds good!!). The set comes with the Cream Excellent, normal sized ($306) and free Infinity Vital Comfort Masks, Infinity Eye Cream 10g (half the normal size) and if I didnt remember wrongly, the Lotion Concentrate and Serum Completion.
I am, however, worried that this might be a bit rich for my combination skin, especially I use all this products in this range. I'm planning to go for Niu Er's Beauty Talkshow then decide whether I want to buy products from this range, so I can use up the $20 voucher that comes with the ticket.

Review: Renew Rose Hip Oil

This Renew Rose Hip Oil is 100% Certified Organic and the oil itself is orange-red in colour. Rosehip Oils contain high essential fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene. The Vitamin A also has anti-aging properties. Rosehip Oil helps heal scars, wrinkles and skin cell repair. This review will not be a full review as I stopped using this product after a while. I now only use this on my lips and neck.

The reason why I stopped using this Renew Rose Hip Oil was because one morning I woke up with tiny bumps all over my face, which are tiny pimples with pus. My face wasn't very red but I could feel the distinctive pimples everywhere. I stopped using after that. (Saved my skin with Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque and a light moisturiser). I only use one drop of Renew Rose hip oil a night.

The feel of the oil on my skin is quite uncomfortable as it just sits in top if my skin and does not absorb well. I think this is the main reason of the clogs all over my face. The oil itself is quite thick. I find it absorbs slightly better when skin is wet, but even then my skin just felt oily the whole night.

I liked that rosehip oils are supposed to be regenerative, improve appearance of acne scars but this Renew one just didn't suit me. I used to use Trilogy and i had no problems with the Trilogy RHO. Trilogy RHO absorbs better and doesn't have that feel of oil sitting on your skin.

I now use one drop of Renew Rose Hip Oil on my lips at night to reduce lip wrinkles as my lips tend to crack and I don't particularly like to use lip balm. I also use this on my neck nightly to reduce neck wrinkles. These are the only two ways I use the Renew Rose Hip Oil to that I can use up the 25ml bottle. If you look at the picture, I have only used up to the point where the top of label is, so I have a long way to go.

I might give this Renew Rose Hip Oil a try again but for now, I will stick to a light moisturiser.

Review: Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on

I bought this Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on pimple treatment after Niu Er introduced this on the 20/12/2010 episode of Nu Ren Wo Zui Da (a Taiwanese beauty programme) and I went to Watsons to get one the next day. The selling point of this pimple roll-on gel is the 2% Salicylic Acid, which is a BHA that will help not only in drying up the pimple, but also to boost skin turnover via exfoliation so that the pimple scar fades faster. It has a high alcohol content and with the metal ball roll-on, it feels cool on touch. I think the metal ball design does not seem that hygienic but I wanted to try the 2% salicylic acid. There was a discount when I bought this so the price was $15.90.

The reason why I went out to buy this Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on was because I knew a pimple was coming on. I felt the sore pain on my cheek. When I bought this, my pimple had developed into an acne type pimple, the kind with pus. I have one or two of such acne during the time of the month.

I have to say, unfortunately, this Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on took a long time to dry out and heal my pimple. A week later, my pimple was still sitting there though healing. My other pimple creams with benzoyl peroxide definitely dries out pimples faster than this one. Usually, Proactiv Advanced Blemish Treatment takes me 2-3 days to completely dry out acne type pimples, and 1 day for smaller ones. It took more than a week with Garnier.

After the pimple dried out, I continued to roll on this pimple treatment as it is supposed to help scars fade faster. But till this day, slightly more than 2 months on, I can still clearly see the brown scar on my cheek.

This Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on was quite a disappointment for me. I bought it with high expectations as Niu Er recommended it on TV. Too bad it didn't work for me.

One thing about Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on that a lot of people are talking about is how the packaging does not seem very hygienic. As pimples are full of p-acnes bacteria, using the same metal roll-on ball on the pimples seems to introduce the bacteria into the product and contaminates the rest of the product. Unless there are sufficient anti-bacterial agents in the formulation, this seems like a possibility. I had small pimples around the areas I rolled on Garnier Pure Active Spot-on Roll-on. I did so because the box said it will clean out the pores, so I figured I'd use it where I have blackheads. Not the best idea.

All in all, I don't think I will repurchase this product. I am moving on to Avene Diacneal.

Review: Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub

I bought Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub to replace my previous scrub when it ran out. I had no particular preference at the moment and since I was at the Avene counter buying Cleanance K, I asked the SA about the Gentle Purifying scrub. She told me it is one of their best sellers (I wonder how true).

This Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub is definitely good for those with sensitive skin as it is so gentle, it didn't feel like I was exfoliating my skin. The scrub has a gel-base and small beads. The gel seems to act as a cushion to buffer the roughness of the beads so it makes it very gentle. There was no irritation or redness when I used this scrub.

I would prefer something less gentle but this is a good scrub to have if you are on AHA/BHA treatments as it is gentle enough not to irritate my skin when I use Cleanance K. Note that I usually stop applying AHA/BHA products one day before and after exfoliating with Avene Gentle Purifying Scrub.

If you are not using any chemical exfoliators (AHA/BHA), then this scrub might be a little too gentle. The tube is quite small (50ml) for the price of around S$29.90. I might not repurchase after I'm done.

Review: Avene Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser

I bought this Avene Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser when it came in a promotion pack together with the new formulation Cleanance K. I originally wanted to get the Avene foaming gel cleanser as it would suit my combination skin better but the SA assured me that this Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser would suit my skin as well. This cleanser does not suit my skin that well. It strips my skin of more moisture than a cleanser should and is more suitable for oily skin as stated on the packaging. My skin condition is now dehydrated and I can feel the tightness in my skin. I only use this cleanser at night as it would be too strong for day time use.

Despite it being too strong for my skin, I like this cleanser as it cleans well. If this is any indication of how well Avene cleansers work, it gave me the confidence to buy the Avene Moussant Soapless Foaming Gel to try out as well (a separate review later).

There is no yellowish stains on my cotton pad when I follow up with my toner, which tells me this cleanser performs well. However, my skin feels tight and dehydrated if I do not follow immediately with my skincare. And there is usually this squeaky clean feeling when I am rinsing off the foam.

This Avene Deep Pore Foaming Cleanser does not irritate my skin nor leave my skin red. I also like that there is no strong fragrance. If I am not wrong, there is no perfume added. So this is good for those who are sensitive to perfume/fragrances in skincare products.

The foam is not dense and thick like that of Fancl's Washing Powder or Hada Labo AHA/BHA Exfoliating Face Wash Foam, but is acceptable for me.

Conclusion
This Avene deep pore cleanser is suitable for oily and sensitive skin, those with combination skin like mine should choose the Avene Moussant Soapless Foaming Gel instead as it might be too drying. This cleanser has good cleansing power.

Tip: Avene products are cheaper in Malaysia compared to here in Singapore.

My Skincare Haul: California Baby

I bought this California Baby Calendula Cream at Robinsons Centrepoint at the infant/babies section! It was a surprise find. I was shopping for a gift and I saw this. I have been hearing good things about the healing properties of calendula and I wanted to give this a try as i had a red patch, which was unexplainable and the product description of california baby said this is for 'mystery' rashes. It is for babies' nappy rash but also for face and body for those with sensitive skin. As we all know, if babies can use it, so can we! I have been using this for about 2 weeks now. I will review this when I have used it for long enough.

Some initial thoughts: Texture-wise, it is not oily and absorbs easily, moisturises well without leaving any oily film. Smells of lavender due to the addition of the essential oil.

Review: La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream

The Finish
The one I bought was the La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream, there is another one that is white and untinted but I was looking for something that functions both as a sunscreen and have some properties to even out my skin tone. I didn't want to use another layer of foundation on my skin as I sometimes do not have time to wait 20 mins for the sunscreen to settle in before applying foundation. I like that the tint suits my NC20 skin and blended in really well. It does not have the foundation look but just helps make my skin look more even toned and slightly dewy/glow to the skin.

The Application
The application was a breeze. It does not feel oily like the Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme SPF50+. It has PPD 18 compared to Anthelios' PPD 38. But PPD of 18 is supposedly enough for office/indoor use, as long as you are not doing outdoor sports. The sunscreen when applied on is easy to blend into the skin and absorbs readily.

The Downside
This La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream would be a winner if it remained the way it is when it is applied. Unfortunately, it makes my skin get oilier as the day gets by. By late afternoon, there would be a visible shine on my skin and when I try to touch up with powder, my skin would get oily again.

The ingredients
This sunscreen would be good for those with normal to dry (and sensitive) skin as it contains emollient ingredients like shea butter, which would moisturise skin. As my skin is combination-type, it might be the reason why my skin got oilier by the end of the day. I would normally skip moisturiser or apply a very light moisturiser as this is moisturising enough for my skin.

Conclusion
All in all, I would have loved this La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL SPF50 PA+++ Tinted Cream if it did not make my skin oily as application was a breeze and the finish was nice and made my skin glow. However, as it gave me a very visible shine (which makes me a little self-conscious), I probably will not re-purchase this. My mom, however, likes this as it is rich enough for her (she has dry skin type).

My next Skincare Haul. I have been buying a lot of skincare products recently. I think it's the Christmas season and that gives me excuses to buy more skincare products.

MUJI Cleansing Oil

I have been reading good thing about this cleansing oil and since my Hada Labo Makeup Remover was about to finish, I decided to try this next. Since many people compare MUJI with Fancl and Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils, I thought I's give this one a try too. The price is cheaper too at S$13 for 200ml.

Renew Rosehip Oil

If you've been reading my blog, last year was when I was really into Rosehip Oil. Rosehip Oils contain high essential fatty acids, vitamin E and antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene. The Vitamin A also has anti-aging properties. Rosehip Oil helps heal scars, wrinkles and skin cell repair. I did not see any changes in my wrinkle when I used this but I do believe in the beneficial components RHOs contain. Will be adding this to my night time skincare. (I mentioned before that I prefer Trilogy rosehip oil, but Trilogy is only sold at selected Watsons and I didn't see it the last time I was at Ngee Ann City or Raffles City Watsons, so I'm not sure if they're still around. I got Renew as it is available at most Watsons.)

Renew Hydrating Mist Toner

When I got the rosehip oil, I bought this as well as I thought it smelled nice. The ingredients were mainly water, rose water and chamomile extract, so it seemed quite soothing. I am not expecting any effects with this product, I just got it to use together with the rosehip oil. A spray like Avene Thermal Spring Water wold work just as well.

Skincare-holic's 2010 Avoid List

As requested by some readers, I decided it would be good to do up a list of products that did nothing for me, was a waste of money or made my skin sensitive (i.e. redness, burning/stinging sensation). As with all other skincare products, these products might do wonders for your skin but not work for mine. For the record, I have combination, sensitive, dehydrated skin. The Face Shop Salon Effect Pearl Collagen Mask Powder.

The name and what it touts to do was what made me attracted to this mask. I thought I was going to get an at-home facial. But this mask burned and made my skin red. I washed it off after a minute as the stinging was just not tolerable. I notice that The Face Shop makes masks with a lot of perfume/fragrance in them. Perhaps the only thing worth getting is the Raspberry Slim and Life Collagen Eye Patch, which happens to be one of my 2010 favouites.

Neutrogena Deep Clean Blackhead Eliminating Warming Treatment

This was a total waste of money. Really, save your money and get a better scrub with better quality and quantity. The tube is tiny and it is not that cheap for just a few usages.

Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF50+/UVA28

This sunscreen was greasy on me, did not absorb well and made me look and feel like an oil mine. It was
chucked aside after a few usages. I'm sure there are better sunscreens out there. Such a waste as I always thought that Cetaphil was a good brand with dermatological background and not just merely marketing hype.

La Mer The Radiant Infusion

Another expensive product with no effects on my skin. This La Mer Radiant Infusion really burnt a hole in my pocket and I was praying hard that it would work. After this La Mer experience, I am convinced that nothing can be done with pore size (I already knew with all the articles out there, but I harboured some hope!) and I will not be wasting money again, regardless of what the next sales assistant says - this product was supposed to give radiance, clarity, minimise pores and tone skin. A good toner would suffice, I still don't get why there is a need for this product. Perhaps for some marketing reasons? The Hydrating Infusion would make more sense since it serves a more definite purpose but I wasn't going to burn another hole to buy a hydrating lotion/serum with a nice name - Hada Labo Hyaluronic Acid Lotion seemed cheaper and worked. I liked Creme De La Mer though and it is one of my 2010 favourites.

Proactiv Renewing Cleanser

I included this here because it didn't suit my skin. It made my skin sensitive. However, it might be good for oily, acne-prone skin, which it was designed for. I don't hate this product but I avoid it now, even though I still have a good amount of it left.

I have mentioned this Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2 quite a few times on this blog as I have been using this for the past one year. The bottle lasted me a long time, so it made the price tag quite worth while since you only need a little each time. I bought this at the duty free shop at around S$43, I'm not sure what the retail price is.

Clinique claims this to be an exfoliating lotion but I don't see which ingredient really exfoliates. But I do believe that it does clean the skin well because I always know when my cleanser underperformed when I see yellowish stains on my cotton pad after cleansing. I did, however, see salicylic acid in Lotions 3 and 4. Salicylic acid is a BHA and an effective exfoliant, but since those two are supposedly for oilier skin types, I don't think i will be trying them.

Clinique Clarifying Lotion vs Clarifying Moisture Lotion
This toner contains witch hazel, which is an astringent and some say witch hazel has anti-oxidant properties. This Clarifying Lotion also contains a high alcohol content. I find it amusing that sales assistants actually have this common excuse that the higher ups probably taught them to teach customers when they ask about the alcohol content - they claim it is medical-grade alcohol, which is okay for the skin. We all know that alcohol is drying but I bought this Clarifying Lotion instead of the Clarifying Moisture Lotion as the SAs uniformly claim it has better exfoliating properties than the Clarifying Moisture Lotion (I plan to get the Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion the next time I travel - it contains more natural ingredients and does not contain alcohol).

Effects
As mentioned, it cleans off any remaining dirt and oil off very well. I always know when that my skin is not clean when I see yellowish stain on the cotton pad and when I test with another new cotton pad and the Clarifying Lotion, it remains white. It works as it claims and that is a good thing, in my book.

It caused redness and stinging for the first one or two weeks but my skin was used to it after that and I didn't experience any sensitivity. It didn't dry out my skin, but I will be switching to the Clarifying Moisture Lotion next to avoid the high alcohol content as I find it a tad harsh.

This Clinique Clarifying Lotion contains menthol, which can be an irritant, but it didn't irritate my skin. I kind of liked the cooling after-feel.

When I read reviews of this toner online, I saw reviews at the two extreme ends. People either love it or hate it. I think it is a matter of choosing what suits your skin. I got samples from the counter and also asked the same questions at different counters, which is why I found their generic answer silly when we all know what alcohol does to the skin. I think the Clinique Clarifying Lotion can be a bit harsh if you have sensitive skin, try it out before buying. The SAs are generally okay with giving out samples if you say you have sensitive skin.

2010 is coming to an end and I thought I'd do up a Favourites List like the one I did for 2009! I looked through the reviews I did in 2010 and rounded up the few I really liked.

Best 2010 Cleanser: Hada Labo AHA/BHA Tamagohada Exfoliating Face Wash Foam

This Hada Labo cleanser doesn't exfoliate well but it cleanses well enough. I like that it is self-foaming and convenient to use. It removes dirt and oil without making my skin feel dry or tight. I used to like Fancl Washing Powder a lot and this cleanser is a good competitor as it doesn't require a foaming ball nor do I have to worry about expiry dates.

Best 2010 Lotion: Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Lotion

This lotion helped improve my skin texture. I could see that my dehydrated skin was more plumped up. It comes in a big bottle and each usage only requires a small amount, so it lasts a long time.

Best 2010 Moisturizer: La Mer Creme de La Mer

This was the only cream I could use when I had patches of dermatitis on my face. It may be rich but if you control the amount you use it will not clog pores (I first press the creme into my cheek area before using the remaining on the t-zone). I like that it is quite soothing, even when my skin was sensitive and would react to most other products. I felt my skin become smoother with usage.

Best 2010 Hydrating Mask: Laneige Water Sleeping Pack

I used to like Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Relief but Clinique did not work well when my skin was very dehydrated and sensitive. It caused redness and stinging. Laneige, however, worked really well and helped restore my skin to normal. I don't experience any clogged pores even when I apply a thick layer. I wake up the next day with hydrated skin.

Best 2010 Clay Mask: BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask

I think this dead sea mud mask is cheap yet good. Its main purpose is to suck out dirt and excess oil from the pores so I don't need an expensive mask with wonderful ingredients and this mask does just that. As the mask dries, I can see spots of oil where pimple or blackheads are at, which shows it really works. It contains tea tree oil, which helps dry out and heal pimples. It is good to follow up with a hydrating mask to replenish moisture.

Best 2010 Eye Mask: The Face Shop Raspberry Slim & Lift Collagen Eye Patch

I almost forgot that I really liked this eye mask until I looked through my 2010 reviews again. It is a bit pricey but it works nicely to hydrate and plump up my under eye area. After using this mask, the jelly-like mask becomes thinner, which shows the essence has been absorbed by the skin. I think I will be purchasing some more soon.

Best 2010 Face Spray/Sensitive Skin Product: Avene Thermal Spring Water

I have been using this for a few years now and I always re-stock whenever there is the 2 for S$29.90 promotion. The Avene Thermal Spring Water soothes my sensitive skin really well and I even use it as an eye mask at times - by saturating a cotton pad with the spring water then tearing it into half and using it as a normal eye mask. It is cooling on the skin and reduces my redness effectively. It also helps when skincare products are too thick/sticky, I spray this over my face and try to massage the products in again.

**This is all for my favourites list this year. It is too bad I didn't find a favourite sunscreen. I have been looking but haven't found one that I like yet.

Do comment with recommendations of skincare products you like and find works well! I would like to try more skincare in 2011 =)

Review: Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF50+/UVA 28

I have been seeing this sunscreen around at watsons and pharmacies and have been wanting to try it as the UV protection seemed quite high at SPF50+/UVA 28. I am assuming this UVA 28 is equivalent to PPD 28 as the Cetaphil brand is under Galderma Laboratories, which is a swiss pharmaceutical company. To read more about PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening and how it compares to the PA+++ Japanese ratings that we are used to, this is a good website) According to that website, a PA+++ rating translates to a PPD rating of 8+. Cetaphil is recommended by some dermatologists and seemed like a reliable brand so I got myself a tube.

Besides the high UV protection, the Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense has no white cast and is easily spreadable across my face. But it is really greasy, despite what the product info says. The sunscreen just sits on top of my skin and does not seem to absorb. It feels as though there is an oily film of sunscreen on my skin. I really didn't like it. I applied it in the morning and by afternoon I really wanted to wash it off. I was glad I was home if not I would have looked like an oil field. I tried it a few more times and it was still as bad. I decided not to use this Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense anymore and chucked it away. Perhaps I will use it on my body instead.

I looked at the Cetaphil.com website and it said this sunscreen contained oxybenzone, an ingredient I don't like in my sunscreen as it makes my skin burn and turn red and irritated. So this is even more reason to not stick with this sunscreen. At makeupalley.com, the reviews were just as bad and it is rated 2.7 out of 5.

This sunscreen is not that cheap. Price: $36.90 for 50ml. I will not purchase this again.

I think these two cost me $39.90, still cheaper than if I bought both alone and after the 20% discount going on now.

I also got tickets to the L'oreal Private Sale (Luxury division - apparently there is a mass division which sells the drugstore brands like L'oreal and Maybelline but there weren't any of these brands there). There were brands like Lancome, Biotherm, Shu Uemura, Vichy, La Roche-Posay and Yves Saint Laurent. I got the Shu Uemura UV Under Base for $35, Biotherm eye make-up remover for $10 and La Roche-Posay Active C Eye Cream for $26 (usual price ≈$59.90). Quite good deals!

My Experience: Stress, Caffeine, Irregular Sleep and My Skin

Stress, Caffeine and Irregular Sleep
I just went through a period of high stress and deadlines, which also means a high caffeine intake and irregular sleeping hours. The results on my skin was bad. As caffeine is a diuretic, it drains your body of water and if you do not drink enough water to replenish moisture, the skin becomes very dehydrated. Because I was taking in a lot of coffee, my skin became very dehydrated (not dry, there is a difference), became rougher and more dehydrated. There was also some peeling on my nose area. Although I was sleeping at irregular hours, thankfully I did not breakout, not even during the time of the month, which I think was due to the microdermabrasion.

Currently, my skin is dehydrated, lines under my eyes are more pronounced and sensitive to certain products like Clinique's Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief.

How I tried to remedy my skin
When skin is dry, one has to load up on both water and oil. But when skin is dehydrated, it needs water. So this is what I have been trying to do. I applied a thick layer of Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief but my skin reacted with stinging and redness. Although Clinique Moisture Surge is meant for dehydrated skin, it did not work for mine at all. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended is really good for my skin when it is in a normal condition, and provides an extra moisture boost but does not work well when my skin is in a sensitive, dehydrated phase.

Even my trusty Neutrogena Deep Hydrating Mask did not work and I had the same stinging and redness from this mask.

Luckily, Laneige Water Sleeping Pack EX worked really well. There was no sensitive reaction or redness on my skin and was really soothing. What I did was I applied a thick layer on my skin for the last step and it provided a nice relief for my skin.

In addition, I loaded up on Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Lotion. Hyaluronic Acid is an excellent humectant. It retain moisture 6000times its weight, that is 1gram can hold up to 6 litres of water. It moisturises well and is gentle on my skin.

My skin is slowly getting back to normal and I have been drinking more water as well. I find that lack of water intake has tremendously bad impact on my skin and this is a very good lesson learnt for me.

I bought this serum as part of a set, with the Anti-Oxidant Whitening Lotion With Fullerene RS™ and a one piece MicroInject Whitening Mask with Fullerene. The price of the set was around S$89.90, so I thought it was quite a good deal. I have read good things about Dr. Wu products especially from urcosme, which is a taiwan-based website. Dr. Wu is a dermatologist from Taiwan and this brand of products seems quite popular there, based on the reviews I have read.

I like this serum and I definitely think this works better than the Fancl White Essence, which too a long time to work. When I first started using this product, I had a few pimple scars (the dark red/brownish kind, not the pot hole type) to lighten. So I observed them while using this Dr. Wu Anti-Oxidant Whitening Serum With Fullerene RS™ to see if it can speed up the lightening process. And surprisingly it did heal faster than usual. I observed little change in my freckle that I have, but I do know that freckles/pigmentation takes longer or may be impossible to remove with serums alone (the fastest way is laser or IPL). This serum is supposed to be suitable for dull and sensitive skin. I felt no irritation on my skin when I used it.

How I use: I usually use one pump for the whole face, sometimes an additional half pump if I have scars to lighten. What I do is to first massage in the first pump then use the additional serum as a spot treatment an concentrate it where I need some whitening.

The Dr. Wu Anti-Oxidant Whitening Serum With Fullerene RS™ absorbs easily, although it is a bit viscous. I think it is on the expensive side for a drugstore brand, so I think it is much cheaper to buy it when they have promotions in sets. I bought mine at a Guardian sale. All in all, I like this serum and I think it works well. But I would only buy it when there is a promotion available.

Review: Hada Labo AHA/BHA Tamagohada Exfoliating Face Wash Foam

This Hada Labo AHA/BHA Exfoliating Face Wash Foam markets itself as an AHA+BHA product, which gently exfoliates the skin for a softer smoother texture. It is a foaming facial wash so when you pump, foam is produced. I usually use about 3 pumps for the whole face.

The reason why I posted the article on AHA BHA earlier was so I could see if this Hada Labo cleanser really meets the criteria for the AHA and BHA to work. Disappointingly, no. Firstly, the Hada Labo AHA/BHA Exfoliating Face Wash Foam claims to be skin pH balanced, i.e. pH 5. AHA and BHAs require a pH of between 3 and 4 to work, so at pH 5, there is no longer much exfoliating properties. Secondly, the concentration of the AHA and BHA should be at a sufficient level for the cleanser to have exfoliating properties. AHAs should be one of the first few ingredients on the ingredients list and BHA should be in the middle. If you look at the ingredients list, glycolic acid (AHA) and salicylic acid (BHA) are the fourth and third last ingredients respectively. This means the concentrations are too little for the AHA and BHA to work. Essentially, it is just a normal foaming facial wash without any exfoliating properties.

So knowing that there are no exfoliating properties, and that it is just a normal cleanser, I think it does well as a normal facial wash. It cleanses thoroughly and does not leave my skin feeling dry or tight after washing. The foam that is pumped out is dense enough and feels comfortable on my skin. I like that I don't have to manually foam my cleanser like I usually have to do when I use Fancl Washing Powder. But if I look at the ingredients, Fancl is more gentle on the skin than Hada Labo, ingredients-wise.

All in all, if you are planning to buy this cleanser, you should not expect it to have any exfoliating properties despite the claims made. It won't help with removing blackheads or sloughing off dead skin. I felt a little cheated when I researched more about AHA and BHAs when I was going to review this product, only to find that the pH and concentration don't meet the criteria at all. But as a normal cleanser, it works well and I like it. The price is about $15.90. So not too expensive, and quite affordable for a drug store product.

I decided to post an article on AHA and BHA before reviewing the Hada Labo AHA/BHA Exfoliating Face Wash Foam. This is from Paula Begoun's cosmetics cop website. Note the properties of AHA/BHA that is needed for proper exfoliation.

An effective AHA or BHA product. One significant consequence of sun damage is that the outer layer of skin becomes thickened, discolored, rough, and uneven. The best way to help skin shed abnormally built-up layers of dead, unhealthy skin is to use a well-formulated alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) product. Such exfoliation will not only even out skin tone it will also produce a significant improvement in the texture of skin. Another benefit is that exfoliating away accumulated layers of dead skin cells helps other products you use, particularly moisturizers, penetrate skin and be far more effective. The most researched forms of AHAs are glycolic or lactic acids. Salicylic acid is the sole BHA option. For AHAs, look for products that contain at least 5% AHA, but preferably 8-10%. If the percentage isn’t listed on the label, then the ingredient should be at the top of the ingredient list. For BHA products, 0.5% to 2% concentrations are available.

The difference in concentrations between AHAs and BHA is not a qualitative one. AHAs are not more effective or better than BHA because of the increased concentration needed for one versus the other. Rather, leave-on, daily use AHAs are effective at 5% to 10% and BHA at 1% to 2%. If you are battling wrinkles and stubborn blemishes or blackheads, BHA is the better choice because salicylic acid can also improve the shape of the pore. Whether you choose an AHA or BHA product, it is essential that the pH of the product is between 3 and 4. This range is necessary for either ingredient to exfoliate skin. You can find products with a pH lower than 3, but these tend to be too irritating for all skin types, which negates their benefits. (When I rate skin-care products with AHA or BHA, the pH is always tested to be sure it can indeed exfoliate skin.) I have been wanting to get some AHA/BHA products and something with Retinoids (over the counter for anti-aging) as my skin is not in bad shape to warrant a visit to a dermatologist.

I have decided to invest in Avene skincare products again. I tried a few a few years back but wasn't impressed so this time I'm hoping they will deliver. I have been comparing products and studying their ingredients as well as reading up on reviews and finally decided on these.

Review: Fancl White Essence

After writing about my experience with Fancl White Essence, I realised I haven't followed up with a review. That's because I didn't have much to say about this product.

Besides an improved texture - more watery and easier to spread out and absorbs faster, as I mentioned in the post on my experience, the whitening effects were not great. I didn't experience much effects after one bottle and so I moved on to the next product waiting in line for me to try.

I found that red pimple scars healed a bit faster with this Fancl White Essence, which shows that it does work, but it didn't really brighten up my skin tone and did not help with the freckle that I have. The fancl Beauty Advisor was the one who pointed out my freckle to me while doing skin analysis, so I was hoping the Fancl White Essence will help lighten it. I know that my freckle won't disappear with just one bottle but the effects on the whole, was not significant enough for me to want to fork out $61.50 for another bottle.

I have been wanting to try out the Shiseido whitening serum for a while now. It is supposedly the best, but it is so expensive that I have been resisting!

fang: Hi, depends on what you are looking for. Hydrating? Whitening? I like Kose sekkisei lotion but I have stopped using it as I regularly try new products. I have not tried the supreme line as it seems quite rich for my skin.

Joann: Hi, for hydration, i like anything with hyaluronic acid. Hada Labo hydrating lotion works well and is quite cheap as the big bottle lasts a long time. Toner: I like clinique clarifying lotion as it removes excess dirt and oil well due to the exfoliating properties. For serums, i think estee lauder's advanced night repair is not bad. I think the Neutrogena Hydrating Mask is good too. I usually buy this in bulk when I see this on sale at Watsons for S$1.95 each. I don't have HGs, I continue trying new products to find my HG but my only HG is fancl's washing powder as it cleanses well and is not harsh on the skin.

iris, ping, sharon: I don't sell the niu er dead sea mud mask. I buy it from payeasy spree online. I bought from her several times and she is quite reliable. I urge you to buy it from reliable sellers as someone commented on my blog that certain sellers sell poor quality products.

My Experience: Microdermabrasion at a Clinic

I decided to go for microdermabrasion at a clinic as I found out that it is cheaper than some ridiculously priced salon microdermabrasion facials. I once asked a beautician why microdermabrasion at their spa is so expensive, more expensive than medical microdermabrasion at the clinic and she gave me a silly 'relaxation and service' excuse.

What I want is a good medical grade microdermabrasion to thoroughly scrub off my layer of dead skin cells and renew my skin, not ~~(lousy)~~ service that most spas provide. My last few facial trips to different spas have been thoroughly disappointing, with me breaking out after the facials. So I decided I would go to a clinic instead, and as my nursing friend put it, if anything happens to your face, there is always a doctor there!

When I first entered the treatment room, the nurse put a pillow behind my back and another at my neck, then the chair was lowered to almost horizontal. She then covered me with a blanket cos the treatment room is cold. (The service is similar to salons and the nurses there are friendly). They offered me drinks: coffee,tea or water and some biscuits while the nurse prepared the machine as it was my 'lunchtime procedure'.

The nurse double cleansed (I think she used Cetaphil, just my guess!). Then the microdermabrasion started! Unlike salon microderm where it feels like the machine is vacuuming/sucking your skin, the clinic one was more painful. It felt more scratchy, a bit like sand-papering your skin - which is of course the intended purpose, to remove the surface epidermis so that the underlying skin is stimulated to produce collagen and newer skin beneath is revealed. So definitely more intense and deeper removal of skin than the spa microdermabrasion. It was painful for me, especially around the area around the eyes. She concentrated the wand at the t-zone and my cheek area where I had more clogs.

Unlike spas, where they just do one round of suction, the nurse made several rounds around my face using the rougher wand, then followed up with a lighter wand which didn't hurt, then ended with an even gentler one for the eye area. So the entire process was very thorough and covered pretty much every part of my face and also part of the neck area.

After the procedure, the nurse will put on a mask for 15-20mins then clean it off and apply moisturiser and sunblock for you. She used La Roche-Posay moisturiser and Heliocare SPF90 gel sunblock.

For me, this procedure was painful and my face was red for about 2 hours and I felt the sting the rest of the day. At around evening time when I washed the sunblock off, my skin became red and stinging again. I think it was cos my skin type is sensitive thats why it was red and stinging for so long. It did not sting that much for my friend but for her, her skin was very dry after the procedure and peeled a bit.

The next day, the sting and redness was gone and my skin looked more even toned, brighter and felt smoother. The blackheads on my nose were gone! But they came back after a few days, which I presume is normal. The red pimple marks were also lightened. I was happy with the results as it seemed more worth it compared to spending big money at spas that aren't that thorough and use a less effective machine. I think I will go back and do microdermabrasion again, since the effects were quite good for me and it seemed more effective than a normal facial.

The Hada Labo Gokujyun Hydrating Makeup Remover is quite a steal at $17.90 from Watsons. I have been using cleansing oils from Fancl and Shu Uemura, so I thought it was time for something more economical. I went by Watsons and picked this Hada Labo make up remover. I chose this over the Aqualabel cleansing oil as the Hada Labo one had more raves on the taiwanese website urcosme.tw, where people review and rate products.

This Hada Labo Gokujyun Hydrating Makeup Remover is not a cleansing oil. It has a gel texture, which made me worried that it might not cleanse well since I have been using cleansing oils for so long. I was pleasantly surprised that it cleansed my makeup well and there was no tight feeling after washing, so it does have some hydrating properties.

The first time I used it, I used it like a cleansing oil, 3 pumps and massage then add a little water to "emulsify". Although it;s not needed, it has become a habit. BUT I discovered that by adding a bit of water and massaging away the makeup again there is a slight warming sensation! I thought I was imagining it but I get that slight 1-2sec warm sensation every time I use it. This feeling makes me feel like the warmth can serve to clean better, although it is probably some chemical reaction with water?

The downside is that it stings the eyes, so try not to open your eyes when you use this. I would recommend using a separate eye makeup remover to remove any eyeliner or mascara.

All in all, it is quite a good product for the price I paid. It is a very simple and normal makeup remover, which does its job. If it was more expensive, I would not re-purchase. But I will consider if I am tight on my budget.

In the real world, people get far less protection than the bottle advertises.

Sunscreen makers establish a product’s SPF by testing their products on volunteers. The testers coat the volunteers’ backs with 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin (mg/cm2), the amount stipulated in FDA’s draft sunscreen regulations (FDA 2007), and then expose them to sunlight-simulating UV radiation until a burn appears. The time needed to burn, divided by the time it takes to burn the volunteers’ unprotected skin, is the SPF.

In real life, people apply one-half to one-fifth the amount of sunscreen used in the laboratory SPF tests (Autier 2003, Azurdia 2001, Reich 2009). Because of the physics of sunlight, that cuts the protection factor not by a factor of just 2 to 5, but by between the square root and the fifth root of the SPF. That’s a much steeper “exponential” cut in protection (Faurschou 2007, Schalka 2009, Kim 2010, Playtex 2007). A number of studies have confirmed people’s tendency to apply less sunscreen than is used in SPF testing. One study of 124 students found that the average application rate was one-fifth (0.39 mg/cm2) the testing amount (Autier 2003). Another study found that ten female volunteers applied a median thickness of sunscreen that was one-fourth (0.5 mg/cm2) the amount used in testing (Azurdia 2001). Even when researchers instructed volunteers on the proper amount to use, they applied too little: A study of 52 subjects found that uninstructed volunteers applied 34 percent of the recommended thickness, and even those who were instructed on how much to apply used only 43 percent of the recommended amount (Reich 2009).

The fact that people use less sunscreen than recommended is not an argument for using even higher SPF products to compensate. Higher SPF products produce small increases in real-world SPF. But even this small change allows sunbathers to stay in the sun longer – and absorb more overall radiation – before a sunburn sends them indoors. In the process, the substantially greater amounts of sunscreen chemicals in higher SPF products can penetrate the skin and lead to much higher internal exposures to potentially hazardous compounds. The user is left with a burn and a significantly higher “body burden” of sunscreen chemicals.

By acne scars I mean the dark red or brown scars that are left over after the acne has healed, not the pitted or rolling scars which are holes that make the skin surface uneven.

To reduce the dark red/brown acne scars, which can last for months. I would recommend using whitening serums regularly, day and night. Also, whitening masks at night would help as a more intensive treatment for reducing the melanin in the skin - the dark pigment that makes up the scar.

Also, it is important to use sunscreen in the day to prevent the scars from darkening and also the maintain the results from your whitening serum/mask. You definitely won't want to cancel out the effects of your whitening by exposing your skin to the darkening effects of the sun.

Lastly, regular weekly scrub/exfoliation will help remove dead skin cells and aid in skin renewal. Our skin is in the form of multiple layers and we shed layers daily. So exfoliating helps remove the old skin cells and helps the deeper new cells (without melanin) come up to the surface. However, this should be done weekly, please do not over exfoliate as it will cause other skin problems like dehydration and exposing the unmatured new skin cells to the surface, which leads to unhealthy skin.

I found an article on eye creams by Consumer Reports. It is the same magazine that analysed anti-wrinkle face creams and found that Olay Regenerist was the top performing cream, ousting top and expensive brands Lancome, RoC and La Prairie Cellula.

In Sep 2009, they were at it again and got some research done on anti-wrinkle eye creams. Again, price was not a determinant for effectiveness and many drugstore brands performed better than higher-end counter brands! I was surprised that Consumer Reports included face moisturisers as the control group and the Simple brand moisturiser (for face) performed really well! Overall, the Report noted very little improvement for all eye creams after 6 weeks, which dampens my hopes on eye creams really working to reduce wrinkles. Prevention is better than cure!! I read in another separate report that many skin experts have said that there is no need for a separate eye cream as the formulations of both face and eye creams are very similar as both require the same ingredients for effectiveness, yet the eye cream can cost as much as the face cream but sold as a tiny bottle, usually only 15ml.

Omija Whitening Line is derived from Omija berries of Mungyeong, South Korea. It hydrates and nourishes your skin better than other existing whitening skincare line.

I think the toner is the most interesting product in this range. It is the world's first toner that comes with a separate tea bag for infusion. So after opening the toner, 'cold-brew' the omija tea bag in the toner! I am very tempted to try this out.

Skinfood also has a few new masks! I am lemming for the Ginseng mask and the acai berry mask. Acai berry, which is the key ingredient in Kiehl's recently launched acai berry range is all the rage now and I think I will be stopping by a Skinfood outlet soon.

As part of my skincare routine, I use a scrub once or twice every week. It is important to exfoliate to remove old skin cells so that skincare products can be absorbed into our skin. The build up of old skin cells and dirt can also clog pores and cause blackheads and pimples.

What I like to do is scrub my face with my scrub of choice, wash it off thoroughly then dry my skin and follow with my Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2. I pour slightly more than the usual amount onto a cotton pad (usually I use a fifty cent coin, roughly the size of the bottle mouth opening) then instead of sliding it across my skin in outward movements as I usually do, I move in circular motion all over my face. Note that you should use an exfoliating toner like Clinique Clarifying Lotion or Kose Seikisho Clear Lotion.

I have been trying this method a few times and I always get a few blackheads/clogs out as I can see the dark yellow bits of the blackheads stuck on my cotton pad. This method works better than the Etude House Green Tea Nose Pack without any need to wait 15 mins for it to dry only to get a measly few blackheads out.

Try out this method and let me know if it works for you!

Review: La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme SPF50+

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme SPF50+ is the latest sunscreen I have been trying out after using Kose Sekkisei Sun Protection SPF50 (which I really liked). This La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL is highly raved online due to the Mexoryl SX+XL which provides long lasting wide spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays. It also has a PPD rating of 38, which is very high. To read more about PPD (Persistent Pigment Darkening and how it compares to the PA+++ Japanese ratings that we are used to, this is a good website) According to that website, a PA+++ rating translates to a PPD rating of 8+. This means the La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Xl PPD is considered very high and it is even recommended for people with sun allergy!

The La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Fluide Extreme SPF50+ has a milky and light tecture. It is very watery and spreads easily on my skin. I don't think that it absorbes fast despite the alcohol content which usually is there to speed up absorption. I think that the alcohol is very drying on my skin and if I use this sunblock near my eye area, I get biting sensations the whole day. This is a very clear indicator that its is too drying for my skin. I think that if I repurchase I should get the cream version instead. The Fluide Extreme is stated to be suitable for people with sensitive skin and is suitable for those with normal to combination skin. My advice would be to avoid the eye area and use a separate sunblock for the eye area.

The Fluide Extreme leaves a white cast on my skin after applying it and after letting it settle in, the whiteness is reduced but still very visible. I usually use foundation after it to reduce the whiteness and the shine. I noticed that although it is drying, it also makes my skin greasy. I wonder if because it makes my skin dry and causes my face to produce oil or is it the product formulation. I have to use powder and I also have an oily feeling throughout the day.

I think that this sunscreen is not my HG as many others have claimed. I really like the high PPD rating as it would help prevent wrinkles and pigmentation but I don't like the alcohol and the greasy after feel. At price $41.90, it is considered slightly expensive for a drugstore brand, but it is good to purchase this when they are having promotion.

** Update 5/3/2011: I used the tinted version and got a skin reaction. The Anthelios XL Tinted fluid SPF50+ made my skin flushed with a burning warm feel. I had red skin the whole day. It was worse nearer the eye area. Tinted version is definitely too dark for NC20 skin colour. It will suit tanned skin tone better.

Review: Fancl Brightening Mist Lotion (Limited Edition)

The Fancl Brightening Mist Lotion I have came with the 2010 Perfect Whitening Kit and the bottle is darker green in colour compared to the Takashimaya Exclusive one available now. The SA I checked with said that contents are the same despite the difference in packaging.

This Fancl Brightening Mist Lotion is supposed to combat dehydration and protect the skin from UV damage. I was doubtful of how this Brightening Mist can help combat UV damage without any SPF in it. So I did some research: according to the Fancl Hong Kong website, there are aloe vera extract and other extracts that help hydrate, suppress dark melanin, and soothe the skin. So technically it combats UV damage not by blocking out UV rays like sunblock but helps to soothe the damage. I think the best protection is still sunscreen so do not rely on this Brightening Mist Lotion for protection.

I have finished my bottle of the Fancl Brightening Mist Lotion and frankly, there are not no effects visible.I did not experience any whitening effects. It gives moderate hydration but little effects otherwise.

I use this whenever my skin feels dry but it manages to hydrate my skin for a while but it becomes tight after a while. So I think this is a handy mist to carry around for emergency situations when you do not have any moisturiser on hand, but not a lasting solution to dehydrated skin.

I usually use this as part of my skincare routine at night. I spray a few times after spreading my whitening essence then use the moisture from the mist to massage the essence in a second time. I do this because sometimes I find that the essence does not get fully absorbed but gets dried up on my skin instead.

Since this Brightening Mist Lotion is said to protect from UV damage and because no one uses UV protection/sunscreen at night, I usually spray a few pumps after my last skincare step, just to use it as protection from the UV rays from the lights and computer screen. Although I am doubtful of its efficacy, I use it merely for a piece of mind.

All in all, I would not pay the price of $29.50 for another bottle of this Fancl Brightening Mist Lotion as I find it similar to other sprays in the market and I rather stick to my Avene Thermal Spring Water. I would buy/use it if it comes with another Perfect Whitening Kit.

Review: Niu Er BioBeauty Advanced Hydrating Serum II

Niu Er BioBeauty Advanced Hydrating Serum II is basically made of hyaluronic acid, which is one of my favourite ingredients to have in my skincare products. Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant, which can suck up moisture from deeper skin layers to the skin surface to hydrate the skin surface. Hyaluronic acid can hold moisture up to 6000 times its weight, so 1ml of hyaluronic acid can hold 6 litres of water! It is amazing and it is one of the hottest ingredients around.

I am now using my fourth bottle of this Niu Er BioBeauty Advanced Hydrating Serum II as it is a relatively cheap and basic serum and it sufficiently hydrates my skin. It is easily absorbed and is sticky as I am patting it in but once it has been fully absorbed the stickiness goes away. This stickiness is very mild so it doesn't bother me at all.

I use this after all my other serums (so I use my whitening serum before using this) and before moisturiser. I use 3 drops and pat it into my skin. And since it can hold lots of water, i spray Avene Thermal Spring Water then pat it in again.

Pricewise, BioBeauty products in general are quite affordable and the same goes for this BioBeauty Advanced Hydrating Serum II. I have been re-purchasing this serum. But there is the new Hada Labo Hydrating Lotion out in Watsons now, which is the new hype from Japan that uses Hyaluronic Acid as the main ingredient as well and I shall be comparing the two before deciding which to repurchase.

Upon application, the Kose Sekkisei Sun Protector made my skin look really oily. It takes a while before the Sunscreen settles into my skin but the shine still remains on my skin. So I usually use a light two-way foundation cake with this.

I did not experience any white cast on my face when I use this sunblock, which is a good thing. I am also able to add more layers of Kose Sekkisei Sun Protector without looking like a ghost.

I wonder why in the product description on the Kose website it states no special cleansing necessary. I still use oil cleanser to cleanse my face regardless of what the website states.

The Kose Sekkisei Sun Protector is similar to Kose Sekkisei Lotion in two ways. Both have the signature Sekkisei Lotion scent that I like. Unfortunately, both also contain alcohol. While I am okay with alcohol in my toner/lotion, I don't like it when my sunscreen contains alcohol as I usually apply sunscreen at my undereye area as well, which tends to feel dry whenever I use sunscreens with alcohol. My undereye area is quite sensitive to alcohol and I won't recommend anyone with sensitive skin to use this product, or at least try it out before purchasing.

There is no significant whitening effects from sunscreen per se. But I believe that sunblock is the best form of prevention for your skin as it helps prevent formation of pigmentation, loss of collagen and ageing, wrinkled skin. Although most articles say that SPF 30 is sufficient, I always purchase SPF50 just to feel more protected.

Price wise, it is comparable to most counter brands at around $46 for 50ml. I think I might purchase this again but I will be trying La Roche Posay sunscreen next, so I will be comparing the two for sure!

Review: The Face Shop Salon Effect Pearl Collagen Mask Powder

I bought The Face Shop Salon Effect Pearl Collagen Mask Powder thinking how nice it would be to have a salon style mask that I can use at home. I was hoping that it would give me the same experience as I usually have at facial salons. I was disappointed

This mask is difficult to use. I didn't use a bowl to mix my mask in as I didn't want to sacrifice yet another bowl for my facial products. This was a bad decision. I tried mixing the mask and water on my palm and it seemed like I was kneading dough. By the time I could properly spread the mask over my face, it was partially dried on my palm. I made a mental note to use a bowl the next time and it was as difficult to mix as before.

The biggest rant is not on how hard it is to mix the mask powder with water, but the fact the moment I spread the mask onto my skin, I felt immediate stinging sensation. The mask dried very fast so I peeled it off and the stinging was gone. But I could feel the stinging sensation the whole time it was on my skin.

I would not recommend this mask for anyone with sensitive skin. Firstly, due to the stinging as I mentioned above and secondly, because of a very strong perfume smell. Perfume usually causes irritation for those with sensitive skin and I think it is not worth trying this mask if you have sensitive skin.

Effects wise, when I removed the mask, my skin felt slightly smoother. And it was also red, not because it gave me radiance but redness due to the stinging.

I don't think I will purchase this again. It is not as cheap as masks that give me better results. The Face Shop Raspberry Slim & Lift Collagen Eye Patch is a much better buy than this Salon Effect Pearl Collagen Mask Powder.

I've decided to start taking the Brands Innershine Prune Essence again. I reviewed it earlier and it didn't do much for my skin,but I'm still hoping it will help my bowel movement.

Lately, I have been less diligent with drinking my Fancl TenseUp EX partly because I'm always too sleepy to remember to drink it and also because of the price. It's getting too expensive to drink this everyday. I am thinking of switching to the collagen pills but I'm not too keen on popping pills daily (I tried it before when I was taking Fancl Hyaluronic Premium Supplement pills and I didn't like the feeling of swallowing pills everyday).

I am also thinking of taking Vitamin E supplements as it is a very good anti-oxidant. But as supplement-taking is a long term thing, I wonder if I am able to commit to it.

What do you all think about taking supplements daily?

I like to do a deep cleansing mask once a week. And a clay mask is my mask of choice as it is able to suck oil and dirt from my skin to prevent clogged pores and lift up impurities from my skin. The BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask is one of the best selling masks from the BeautyDIY line of products.

I like the BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask as it contains tea tree oil, which is beneficial for acne prone skin as it is a good anti-bacterial agent and kills the bacteria which causes pimples/acne. The BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask does not dry out my skin when I wash it off. There is no tight or stinging feel when it is dried or after washing so I find that it is not overly harsh for my skin.

How to use: I apply a thin layer of the BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask and allow it to dry before washing it off. It usually takes 10-15 minutes for it to dry. The colour of the mud turns from dark green to light green and you can see oil spots which are oil secreted from your pores. It is most visible around the nose. It shows that the product is really sucking up excess oil from my skin.

I usually follow with a hydrating mask to replenish moisture. When your skin loses oil, it becomes drier and when your skin is dry, it sends a signal out to produce more oil, so it is good if you follow with a hydrating mask to moisturise your skin.

I find that clay masks all serve the same function, which is to suck up excess oil accumulated in your pores, so I don't really buy expensive clay masks since they all serve the same basic function. The BeautyDIY Dead Sea Mud Mask is quite cheap (I bought it for around S$13-14) and the tub lasts me for quite a long time. I am currently using my second tub and I have not found a better replacement yet.

This product was prescribed to me when I went to have a consultation with Dr Georgia Lee. She said my skin is on the sensitive side and recommended her drgeorgialee cleanser - sensitive to me, she recommended stopping my oil cleanser, then use this a a makeup remover.

I was initially not used to this drgeorgialee cleanser as it does not foam, so basically I use about 3 pumps and massage it in circles around my face then I wipe it off with cotton wool, repeat then wash off instead of wiping with cotton wool. The lady at the clinic said I can wipe off with cotton then wash off later.

I was told that this cleanser can be used to remove make up, as Dr Georgia Lee had recommended me to use this in place of my oil cleanser. But honestly, I have since reverted to using my Shu Uemura Oil Cleanser. Reason being, the oil cleanser removes my makeup and sunblock much faster. I have to repeatedly use 3 pumps worth of the drgeorgialee cleanser about 4 times before my cotton wool is totally clean, which is a total waste of the product (which is not cheap at all). What I do now is I remove my makeup using my Shu Uemura Oil Cleanser then wash my face again once with the Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive. (My makeup involves a layer of sunblock then a light layer of 2 way foundation cake and light blusher)

I find that after washing with the Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive, my face is less red and feels a bit soothed. My skin does not feel any dryness or tightness, which is a good sign that the Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive is not overly harsh.

If I follow the routine of oil cleanser then Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive, I find that my cotton wool is clean even after using my Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2, which is a mild exfoliant and usually makes any left over sebum/dirt show on the cotton wool as yellowish dirt. So the oil cleanser in combination with the Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive is able to wash my skin thoroughly enough. But I will not use the Drgeorgialee Cleanser - Sensitive on its own as I feel it does not remove my sunblock and makeup as thoroughly as my oil cleanser.

All in all, this is an expensive cleanser. It is good if your skin is really sensitive but to use this as a makeup remover as was Dr Georgia Lee's intention is quite a waste of money for me as the amount I use in one day to cleanse is really too much.

My Experience: La Mer Creme De La Mer as Treatment Face Mask

I dropped by the La Mer counter to replenish my La Mer Creme De La Mer or The Moisturising Gel Cream. I didn't know which to get as I like both. The Moisturising Gel Cream suits my skin type (dehydrated combination) better but the Creme De La Mer suits all skin type and when I use Creme De La Mer I use it around my eyes as well.

I asked the SA for advice and she gave me two reasons to choose the creme. It seems she prefers it more.

1. The creme is slightly more economical because one tends to use more of the Gel each time as it is less oily. This is really true! I realised very early on that I tend to use more Gel than Creme as I tend to be more careful not to scoop too much Creme cos of the risk of it being too rich for my skin. When I use the Gel it seems habitual to scoop more so that my skin is more than adequately hydrated and smooth.

2. The SA taught me a new way to use the Creme - as a treatment face mask. I also spread it over my eye area as an eye mask.

First spread a thicker than usual layer of the Creme onto your skin (without rubbing).

Leave it on for 5 minutes and then rub your hands together to warm them and press the Creme into your skin. The Creme will melt and then massage the Creme into your skin in upwards motion. This helps in lifting and firming.

Then dab off the excess Creme with a tissue if you find that it is too oily. But I usually massage it in as much as I can, then I warm my palms and press them onto my face.

It is recommended that you use this about once every three weeks as a treatment face mask. It is very rich so it is not recommended to use it too often.

My Experience: Proactiv Solution Renewing Cleanser + Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

In my previous review of the Proactiv Renewing Cleanser, I mentioned that I find it harsh for my skin and can by drying if used daily. I found a way to lessen the harshness of this cleanser. I use this with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser only has 8 ingredients (3 of which are parabens - preservatives) so it is essentially a very basic cleanser. This makes it a good base to mix other harsher cleansers as the ingredients in Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser are basic ingredients that most other cleansers also have.

Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.(from Cetaphil.com)

What I do is I mix 1 part Proactiv Solution Renewing Cleanser with 1 part Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and I find that this mixture works well for me. I find that it makes the Proactiv Renewing Cleanser less drying and also cushions the scrub beads so it does not feel so rough on the skin. You can adjust the ratio of Proactiv vs Cetaphil to the amount your skin can take and you get the benefits of the Benzoyl Peroxide with less dryness.

Give this a try if you find Proactiv too strong for your skin!

My Review:

I didn't think that this product worked wonders for me. The product description said skin looks bright and radiant immediately but that did not happen for me. Despite finishing the bottle, it still did not look like my pores were minimised. I thought that this La Mer Radiant Infusion was like an expensive additional step that did little for me. I did appreciate that there are anti-oxidants in The Radiant Infusion, which are always a good thing to have in any product.

This product supposedly is a pre-serum step. And I think it works to boost the performance of the serum/creme but I also think it has some astringent properties due to the alcohol.

This product has alcohol denat as the third ingredient, so those concerned with alcohol or with sensitive skin should not choose this product. I have experienced some redness when my skin is more sensitive than usual. The Hydrating Infusion will be a more recommended product if you have sensitive skin.

The price of La Mer The Radiant Infusion is $195 and I thought that the effects didn't match the price tag. I think I might have gotten more out of a serum of the same price. I doubt I will purchase this again.

My Review:

I really wanted to like the Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes but it didn't turn out as good an eye cream as I hoped it would be. I will review the two eye creams separately.

I decided to try the Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes because I really liked the idea of the day eye Perfect Renew Eye Cream with SPF25/PA++. Some brands of sunblock I own have alcohol in them, which can be drying for the eye area. So I usually avoid using sunblock at the eye area when there is alcohol in them but I feel uneasy with my eye area being exposed to UV rays which cause aging. The idea of having a specialised Day eye cream with UV protection appealed to me and i bought one to try

I find that the Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes day cream is a bit on the oily side and requires some patting in before it is fully absorbed. I notice that the end of the day, it made my eye area look cakey with my make up on. I also wonder how much sun protection I am getting with the little eye cream that is used. I think we all already know that a certain amount of sunscreen has to be applied to give adequate protection, so a thin layer of this eye cream might not be enough.

The effects of this Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes Day Cream SPF25/PA++ is not as described in the product information above. It did not help with my dark eye circles, nor did it help with my fine lines. It does brighten the eye area a bit but it is superficial brightening due to the pearl ingredient. My eye area looked as before once face is cleansed.

The Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes Night Gel is even more disappointing. The product information above says that it is light. But to me, it is not light at all and quite oily as well as sticky after I pat it into my skin. It takes a while to be absorbed and that is not all - it caused small pimples at my eye area. The pimples are those tiny kind that pops out when a cream is too rich for your skin. It really surprised me as this is the first time I developed such small zits at the eye area. And to make sure that it really is caused by Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes, I tried it on many different occasions once the small zits recovered. But the zits appeared consistently. It got better when I reduced the amount I used but then my eye area did not feel moisturised enough.

I think that the price of this Laneige Perfect Renew Dual Touch Eyes is quite high for a product that does not deliver results for me. Although I note that it is 15ml + 15ml, which is double that of eye creams from other brands. I would rather Laneige sell 7.5ml + 7.5ml and at a cheaper price, so I would not feel so much of a heartpain knowing that it does not suit me and does not work. I will not repurchase this eye cream again.

My Experience: Fancl TenseUp EX

I have been drinking Fancl TenseUp EX for the past 2 years. But because consuming such beauty supplements require long term consumption I will not be writing a review. I will write about my experience in consuming the Fancl TenseUp EX.

I don't believe in overnight effects of drinking collagen drinks, so I am wary when people say that they see effects after one bottle. I find that it is a bit exaggerated. I saw some effects of Fancl TenseUp EX after about one month (3 boxes). I find one month is a good test of whether supplements work as our skin renewal process takes one month.

My fine lines were not plumped up and my pores were not minimised, as some people claimed. For me, I find that ny skin looked brighter, more radiant and even toned. My skin looked presentable even with only sunblock and no makeup.

I got lazy after a while as there were no more effects on my skin and started drinking less often after one year. But because I bought many boxes at one go to stock up during the Isetan Private Sale, I started drinking Fancl TenseUp EX regularly again. This was when I observed the effects I described above more significantly. I noticed that the next morning after I drank a bottle of Fancl TenseUp EX, my skin looked better than when I did not. I wondered whether I was imagining things but I found that it happened consistently.

I have a few Fancl Beauty Advisors whom I always look for and purchase my supplies from them, and I was chatting with one of them the other day and realised that she has no undereye wrinkles despite being in her early 30s. She said that she drank Tenseup for almost 10 years and even though you don't see the effects now, you will see it when you are older and you compare yourself to others your age.

Some people say that after drinking collagen, it gets digested, breaks down into other components and may not form collagen in our body. Others say that it gets digested and collagen will be distributed to all over out body to wherever requires collagen, which includes our facial skin. Whether it works or not, there are still arguments about it, but I will still drink it cos I think there is a difference when I drink it.

My Review:

I saw this Trilogy Cream Cleanser at Watsons and was very tempted to try it. I was very into the benefits of rosehip oil, and I thought it would be good to try Trilogy range of products as well. The website and the bottle description both sound quite impressive and that is the reason why I bought this cleanser. But I have to say that this is really a disappointment. I have used half the bottle and decided not to continue using it anymore.

The biggest reason why I don't like this Trilogy Cream Cleanser is because the first time I used it, my skin felt a distinct burning sensation and it made my skin red. After experiencing this, I stopped using the Trilogy Cream Cleanser in case it worsened my skin. My skin went back to normal after a few hours and did not turn red using Fancl Washing Powder. After some time, I picked up this cleanser to try it again, it still gave me the same burning sensation.

I felt that the cleansing effects of the Trilogy Cream Cleanser is not very good. It claims to be able to remove makeup but I don't feel that the Trilogy Cream Cleanser cleanses thoroughly enough. It was not able to remove waterproof makeup, contrary to what the reviewer on the Trilogy website claimed. I usually use very light makeup - sunblock then a thin layer of bb cream or powder foundation (two-way cake).

I say that the cleansing power is not good because I always test how clean my skin is with the Clinique Clarifying Lotion, which is a mild exfoliant. If there is any yellowish or greyish colour, it means that my skin is not clean enough. If there is any beige colour, it is even worse, cos it means my make up was not cleaned off properly. With this Trilogy Cream Cleanser, my cotton pad was still coloured.

After cleansing, my skin did not feel tight but it did not feel nourished either. My skin also did not feel smoother, softer or beautifully refreshed as the description claims.

I think this cleanser is not worth its price and there are better cleansers around.

My Experience: New Product - Fancl White Essence

The new Fancl White Essence will be launching tomorrow and some of you wanted to know what the new Fancl White Essence is like. I will provide some initial thoughts on the product but it is not a full review as I have not used it long enough to write a full review.

I attended the launch preview on 16 May and have since tried the Fancl White Essence for a few days. The new version has an emphasis on sustained whitening effect due to the new ingredients like the olive leaf extract and it supposedly works both as a spot treatment as well as an overall whitening treatment, so there is no need for separate products.

Texture-wise, I feel that the new Fancl White Essence is more watery compared to the previous version and more readily absorbed. Regarding the whitening effects, it is too early to tell since it has only been a few days.

The price remains the same at $61.50. So I think price-wise, it is cheaper than many other counter brands and even drugstore brands like Dr Wu whitening serum is slightly more expensive.

I think that by age 20+, freckles and pigmentation will start to appear and this is the crucial timing to start applying whitening products. Despite my diligent application of sunblock daily, my Fancl skin analysis at the launch event showed that I have one freckle. Although it is light, with time and with the horrible hot weather, freckles will darken and grow bigger. So it is important to do whitening as well as protecting your skin from the sun with sunblock to prevent pigmentation from occurring.

My Experience: Watsons Members Preview Sale

Did any of you go for the Watsons Members Preview Sale? I went to the one at Takashimaya and the queue was crazily long! For those who missed the sale, I don't think you missed much. The sale was a 20% + 10% discount, so basically an additional 10% discount on the usual counter brands. I had been eyeing the Dr Wu Whitening serum and the Hyaluronic Acid serum but there were no discounts for this brand so I was quite disappointed. Other than that, I stocked up on Majolica Majorca mascara (I like the Gorgeous Lash Wing) and their liquid eyeliner, Avene Thermal Spring Water (2 for $29.90 - the usual promo price, no added discount), La Posay Roche Anthelios SPF50 sunblock which I have been wanting to try after reading raves on cozycot forum, and other usual drugstore stuff like cotton pads and hair dye.

The place was really crowded and people squeezing around to get to different places, it was quite unpleasant and I thought they should have controlled the number of people going into the shop at any one time. If there are any such subsequent events, I don't think I will make my way down to Takashimaya just to catch this sale, it just made me really tired after that one hour of shopping in Watsons. Perhaps trying other outlets or just buying the products during the 20% sales that occurs once every few months would be sufficient for me.

Feeling threatened by spa

Readers who follow my blog should know that a month ago, I wrote about my experience at a certain spa at Orchard Central. It was obviously a bad experience for me and I came here to rant about it. Well, they tracked me down and are threatening to take legal action against me. I was so tired of corresponding with them as they were questioning my honesty and now they are going to this extent. I don't see any meaning in going head on against them but I don't think I did anything illegal. It seems like there is no such thing as freedom of speech with such things going on.

Anyway, thanks to those who read my blog daily. I guess you guys know very well what I am talking about. To those who left me comments when I published that post, thank you.

After you massage in your moisturiser/last skincare step, it is good to rub your hands together to warm your palms then press it onto your skin. The warmth will help in absorption of your skincare products and also to stimulate blood circulation, which will give you more radiant skin. I find this step very soothing and relaxing, so I really like doing this as it helps make your products more effective by aiding absorption.

I first do this at the cheek area, then the forehead and chin and lastly around the eyes. Because the warmth helps blood circulation, if you use it around the eye area, it can help relieve a bit of your dark eye circles.

Remember when you do this around your cheeks, forehead areas, do an upward movement. So slightly lift your skin then hold it there and allow the warmth stay on your skin for a while. This action will help with lifting your skin and preventing sagging.

Review: Proactiv Renewing Cleanser

I got this Proactiv Renewing Cleanser as part of a set with the Proactiv Advanced Blemish Treatment and the Proactiv Daily Oil Control when Watsons was having promotion. Since I really like the Proactiv Advanced Blemish Control, I thought I'd give the other items a try. I have reviewed the other two items in this set and the links are available below, I will be reviewing the Practiv Renewing Cleanser today.

I feel like the Practiv Renewing Cleanser is more like a scrub cleanser because there are small beads in the cleanser, which makes is a bit harsh for my skin. I have a combination skin type, dehydrated outside oily inside type of skin and I find that this can be drying for me. I use this cleanser on days when I find that I have some pimples and I use this is combination with the Advanced Blemish Treatment just so it would be more effective. I tried making this cleanser my daily cleanser but it is really too harsh, I will only recommend this for oily/acne-prone skin types.

One thing good about the scrubbing beads is that it helps exfoliate away dead skin cells and allows the Benzoyl Peroxide to be better absorbed in to your skin, making it more effective. But if you do not have widespread acne, the Benzoyl Peroxide will dry out your skin. Benzoyl Peroxide is an anti-bacterial agent, so it helps kill bacteria which cause acne. I use this cleanser once a week if I do not have breakouts just as a preventive measure to kill away the acne-causing bacteria. When I am suffering from some pimples, I will use it on alternate days, only at night.

It is useful to have your own normal day cleanser and use this cleanser as a supplement to your skincare regime if you are more acne prone. But I don't think I will repurchase this Proactiv Renewing Cleanser as it does not suit my skin.

Updated Review: Creme de La Mer & The Moisturizing Gel de La Mer

[Updates]: Someone dropped me a note and asked for more details on the effects of creme/gel de la mer. I shall add on to my previous review.(I understand that it is expensive and more consideration has to be made before purchasing this! =) )

For Creme de La Mer, the creme was too rich for my skin, which is why I now use it as my eye cream. It is moisturising enough as an eye cream as it has a lot of emollient ingredients. It absorbs well and has not given me any milia seeds. As a moisturising cream, it is a bit on the oily side for my combination skin, despite me reducing the amount of creme used. My skin lacks moisture, not oil as I have a dehydrated oily skin type, so it did not suit me that well. I think it might have contributed to some clogs on my face as well. I think that it will be good for those with dry skin type.

The gel is more refreshing for my skin. Absorbs fast and gives my skin a glow. I find that my clogs are lesser when using this gel. Perhaps due to the higher water content of gels, which is what my skin needs.

Effects wise, for both creme and gel de la mer, I find that my red pimple marks healed/faded faster than usual. But I wonder if it is psychological. I use my usual Kose Sekkisei Lotion, SK-II Facial Treatment Essence but I don't use any whitening serum. If you are looking at investing in the creme for wrinkles, I find that it did not help with any of my undereye lines. I have 2 lines at the left side (not the right!), and they have not disappeared.

If you are considering which to purchase, I suggest buying the one that suits your skin type. The La Mer website actually states that the creme is suitable for all skin types. And because I wanted to buy the classical product from the La Mer skincare line (due to the price, I should get the classic one right?), I chose to buy the Creme but I find that it does not suit my skin as a moisturiser. Thankfully it works well as an eye cream, or else I would have given it to my mom. The website does state that the creme is suitable for the eye area, which was why when I was using the creme for the face, I used it for my eye area as well, saving me one additional product and skincare step.

The creme works better if you have sensitive skin. The Gel sometimes make my skin a little red. It doesn't happen often but I would stick to the creme.

I hope I provided more information for you to consider before making your purchase! =)

p.s. I am currently using the La Mer Radiant Infusion. I will give the product more time for it to make its magic and I will review it here soon! For now, the Radiant Infusion has not done much for my skin.

I find that this mask is not very effective in removing blackheads (comedones) for me. If I am lucky I see a few being pulled out, but it is usually not more than 5. What I usually see after pulling this mask off it some whitish stuff, which are dead skin flakes, which will also be removed by other scrubs. I also see fine facial hair pulled off, but I do wonder if it is a good thing or not. Do be careful not to apply the mask near your eyes of lips area as the pulling action will induce fine lines/ wrinkles!

I sometimes find it messy to deal with the blackish mask especially if it drips but it is not a big matter. If you are getting this mask to try removing blackheads, I think it does not work well enough. The whitening effects of this mask is minimal and if any, I would attribute it to the exfoliating effect of the mask after it pulls off your surface dead skin. You will get the same results using a normal scrub. You can experiment by using a scrub only on one hand and you will find it fairer than the other. The whitening/brightening effect is minimal and a whitening mask can do a better job.

I very much prefer Kose Sekisho Exfoliating Massage Gel than this Mask White. I like that the Exfoliating Massage Gel has a warming property that would not only open up the pores to aid exfoliation of dirt and sebum, it the heat also promotes blood circulation for a radiant complexion. The gel turns from black to gray to indicate enough scrubbing and this prevents excessive scrubbing of the skin. The gel acts like a cushion so the exfoliating beads does not feel harsh to the skin. There is also no waiting time involved, unlike Mask White where I have to wait at least 15 mins for the mask to dry.

I would purchase Kose Exfoliating Massage Gel instead of Mask White, but there are many people out there who love the latter. I suggest trying out the two products at the counter and seeing which you prefer.

Gel de La Mer is an ultralight edition of the original Crème de la Mer that hydrates and refreshes the skin, leaving a supremely soft finish. Its gel-like texture is ideal for warmer weather and times when a true cream just might be too rich.

I am currently using both the Creme de La Mer and the gel cream version. I initially started out with the Creme as I wanted to try the classical version first. But I found it a bit too rich for my combination skin. Although the Creme is purported to suit all skin types, I suggest using the gel version for combination and oily skin especially in humid and warm Singapore weather.

I will provide a short comparison between the Creme de La Mer and Gel de La Mer. The Creme has to be warmed between the fingertips to activate the broth and 'pressed' into the skin. The gel skips the warming step.

The Creme, when applied leaves an occlusive film on my skin. I think that this has to do with the rich emollient ingredients in the creme like lanolin. I find that it requires some time for it to be absorbed and I have to warm my palms to aid in absorption. Some people might find the richness of the creme uncomfortable in our climate. I am okay with this richness but I worry it might clog my pores further (the creme has ingredients like mineral oil and lanolin that potentially clog pores) so I now use the creme as an eye cream as it is suitable for use around the eye area as well. It moisturises really well as an eye cream as my eye area is dryer than my facial skin and requires a richer cream.

The gel suits my facial skin very well. It is readily absorbed and does not leave my skin feeling oily after it is absorbed. It gives a refreshing feel upon application and despite its gel form, it moisturises very well. I really like the Gel de La Mer and I find that gel cream moisturisers are usually the best for skin that is oily yet dehydrated like mine, and not too rich for the T-zone as well.

Both the Creme de La Mer and gel de La Mer are wonderful products but are very dreadful to the wallet. However, if you are willing to splurge on moisturisers as an investment for your future skin, I recommend these two products, but do choose them according to your skin type for it to work best.

Oil cleanser or Milk cleanser?

For my oily on the inside, dry on the outside skin type, I was advised to not use oil cleansers. A doctor that I visited also advised the same as emulsifiers can clog pores. But the thing is, no other cleansers beat the convenience of oil cleansers. With a few pumps, it was thoroughly remove all traces of make up from my skin. Whereas for milk cleansers, I have to repeat the cleansing steps a few times before my skin is make up-free. I am currently using Drgeorgialee cleanser for sensitive skin as a make up remover. She prescribed it to me as she said my skin is a bit sensitive. With this cleanser I have to pump three times while cleansing the first round, remove with cotton pads, then use two pumps and repeat until the cotton pads are do not indicate any colour. This process usually takes me three or four and even five times if my make up is thick. This is why I usually prefer oil cleanser when I have thick make up on. However, I still wonder if I am sacrificing good skin for convenience when I am using oil cleansers.

I don't think I will give up on oil cleansers yet. Although I know it isn't good and might not suit my skin type, I think it is still the easiest alternative for removal of thick make up and when I am in a rush.

It is important to check the suitability of your cleanser for your skin type. If your skin is having adverse reactions to your cleanser, for example sudden breakouts, the cleanser might not suit your skin.

Although my skin used to take well to oil cleansers, my skin type changed while I lived overseas for a period of time. It is also important to observe your skin and skin type to ensure that your skin is kept in its best condition.

Skincare-holic's Skincare Tip #5: For Skin Type - Dry Outside/Oily Inside.

I went for a facial recently and the beautician commented that my skin surface is dry on the outside and oily inside. This is the most troublesome skin type and the last period of time I had this dry outside/oily inside skin type was in secondary school when my skin was at its worse.

The best way I know of to normalise this skin type is to make sure that your skin is hydrated, not with oil-based moisturisers but water-based ones. The ones I really like are those that contain Hyaluronic Acid. I like the dr georgia lee moisturiser for all skin type, but it costs a bomb at $168 before gst. As its replacement, I use hyaluronic acid serum from Niu Er's Biobeauty for a moisture boost.

I also mask with sheet masks that are not oily and thick, like the Neutrogena hydrating mask, which provides moisture that is readily absorbed.

My skin is getting better following this regime. I hope it works for you too!
